I think you did exactly the right thing, given the circumstances. I, too, see another genoa and/or spinnaker halyard in your future :-)

We did something of the same when we lost our hydraulic backstay tensioner about 100 miles north of Grenada. Christmas winds blowing 40-45 knots, 18 foot seas. Saw it shooting oil and the piston pulling out, so immediately got two 3/4" nylon ropes around it just above the swage fitting, ran them through a couple of hefty snatch blocks on each quarter, and forward to big cockpit winches. Tightened them down pretty good. Tested them, and they lasted just fine the final 100 miles to St. Georges.

Wow - this makes me glad I "upgraded" our Beneteau 343 with gennaker gear. It includes an extra coach-top winch and get this...a spare halyard! So far, I've put that halyard to good use lifting the dinghy onto the deck...but now, I need to make sure its ready in case I blow a stay or shroud!

Mark - just know that the numbered series Beneteuas have the pulleys on top of our US Spar mastheads...its just laziness and cost controle that they didn't rig up 2 halyards. Should be an easy thing to do if you have a long enough messenger line and a spare weekend.

probably needless to say but have those mast monkeys check the others when they're up there if the hight thing bothers you. SS? swedge fittings? yellowish discoloration? When one goes, might be time to replace the others also...?

That top swage,especially with the roller furler puts extra load at that point,have the riggers check that it is properly toggled while hes up there,ive seen lots of problems in that area. I must say im rather suprised that you dont have any spare halyards up fwd, get some.

4 strands 1 cm (1/2 inch) up inside the top swage had previously been brocken because we could see the rust on their broken surfaces. The rigger said I would not have been able to see there was a problem by a normal instection.

We cheacked everything else and 2 lower shrouds have 1 strand each broken so they have been replaced.

Yes, you're right that all should be done now (as soon as finances are refreshed)

Cost was $720 for the forestay, $300 each for the shrouds... I thought that was OK.

Yes, I'll put in the extra halyards as I need to replace all the running rigging over the next year.

I am still at the riggers dock till monday as when they were tuning the rig late today they found the inner forestay frozen. So I am doing the penetrating oil till monday when they will rip it out and lathe it off...


Its all OK, I would just have liked to have done the whole job at a moment of my choosing. But when the hell do we get that option???! LOL

I am still stuff if I know how those that think they can cruise on $500 per month can just pluck 3 extra months budget outta their bums for these type of unexpected repairs.


I so need a clear water bay to swim and relax...
