New mosquito borne painful illness shows up in the Caribbean

Wonder if this will alter destination plans for any cruisers?

Having survived this suckers big brother Dengue Fever
I can tell you this is No Joke
I for sure wouldn't go to where this is an issue
especially if there are other places nearby that are similar
Like Dengue this virus seams to like Mosquitos that thrive in
Urban like environments. I got Dengue in Merida, Mexico

Not a major problem. We had an outbreak last year in Port Moresby (the missus caught it). Unpleasant, but nowhere near as bad as malaria and other endemic tropical diseases.

When did you get it in Merida? I was there last year around Dia De Muertos.

The new fever is called chikungunya (pronounced chick-a-gun-ya) and is spread by the same mosquito as dengue. And they are out in the day time so spray the repellant well!
