One thing to keep in mind is that Marathon now charges $22 per day to use the dinghy dock, so anchoring out costs just as much as picking up a mooring, if you can get one. I would add that there are tons of other interesting little coves and bays for anchoring in the Keys, though few that offer really good protection unless you have shallow draft and can take the inside route. Also, getting ashore is often a problem in much of the Keys.
