Is this the same cyclone that was stronger than Katrina? If so, I am surprised that there wasn't more damage and loss of life.

If I am not wrong this storm was well forcasted and yet in looking at the fotos there are numerous boats with dodgers, sails and inflatables that had not been stowed away before the storm hit. I wonder why?

hey, I gotta question. I been keeping one of my eyes in my pocket as a spare, and to protect it from the UV, etc. I have saved a ton of money on polarized monocles..but anyhow, I noticed my spare eye has developed some scratches from rattling around in my pocket next to my roach clip. I carry that in the same pocket, because down here you never know when you might run across a roach that needs to be clipped. Can you suggest something that I can use to take the craze off my spare eyeball?
I tried vodka, but that just made it blurrier.

I got this special deal on eyeballs from Walmart. But I can't give any details because then I would officially be banned to the netherworld of being designated a vendor. So all you guys who need eyeballs are on your own. Maybe you should start an eyeball thread.

Electronic charts are really good at telling you what reef you wrecked your boat on when you weren't using your eyes.

You are oh so right.

I get crap for navigating a racing boat using paper charts and eyes. I am happy to stick to common sense. A good example, sandbanks move from where they are noted on electronic charts!!

Take an unwanted boat + a paid up insurance policy + leave all canvas and sails on boat + hurricane/typhoon/cyclone = $$$$$$

Some 60 foot powerboater nearly ran over us last summer.

Stacy, you're absolutely right. It's the first thing that caught my attention in those photos. Dodgers, furled sails, mainsails flaked and covered, even a dinghy on davits!

Shouldn't all those things get stowed when a cyclone approaches? Maybe cyclone Ului caught everyone by surprise?

Sorry to hear about the loss.

Ulithi is a beautiful Atoll but not exactly a safe haven in a Typhoon.

I have spent a lot of time cruising and exploring Micronesia both running commercial exploration cruises and with yachts.

The Barrie family are in for an interesting culture shock if they go native on that island in order to rebuild their boat.

Firstly: the concept of ownership is quite different and things will start to disappear quite quickly in the most innocent of ways and with a rationale that would drive your average capitalist crazy…..They need to quickly align with the chief so that he gets a large bonus if the boat leaves without any pilferage by creating a taboo against “borrowing” anything.

Secondly, skin diseases on island tend to affect visitors badly and I have taken a few Peace Core workers and missionaries off island for treatment of serious infections. Their health and diet will be tested

Third: There are a lot of taboos on the islands… but rape is not one of them…. Especially if the women show their legs. I would worry about my daughters.

Hope everything works well for them, but paradise can have quite a few dangers
