As someone else on this board pointed out, many of us do that kind of thing when young. My friend and I debated on sailing over to Catalina Island one day (about 25 or so miles) on my Prindle 16 catamaran. We thought it over because we could see the island fairly clearly, but decided against since nobody knew our plan. One of my better life decisions. But my girlfriends brother a year or so later attempted sailing his newly purchased, but old boat and without even a lesson. The CG did have to rescue him as he found himself lost in the fog and with no idea of where he was.
