Let me get this right. They abandoned the Bounty due to 40 knots (75klms) of wind and 5.5 meter waves? wtf?

We should wait for details before jumping to conclusions. Afterall, the brief report does say that she was taking on water....

True Brad true. Most timber boats of her design do take on water. perhaps it was more than they could shift. But that ship is designed to take on a lot more than Sandy- which is big, but not overly powerful at a mere cat 1.

That crossed my mind too. I'm thinking she sprung planks and prolly other things which pointed to the narrow corner of the box of options. The bucket of luck was emptying.

Superior captain would use superior knowledge to avoid having to use superior skill.

Read up on the full history of the replica. I seem to recall that she was not a full spec construction, intended to be only used for the film. How extensively improved later?--who knows.
This is tough weather however, we (Bermuda) had 50 knots last night, and this thing was 400 miles WNW of us. Still 30-40 now.

She was full spec and slightly longer than the original to accomodate engines. I was aboard recently.

Yep. Old Capt Cook had a few problems so he simply parked his ship, Endeavour, onto a beach and fixed it. No C-130s, no choppers. He just got on with it.

HMS Bounty abandoned in Hurricane Sandy

From:

BBC News - HMS Bounty abandoned amid Hurricane Sandy

HMS Bounty abandoned amid Hurricane Sandy

HMS Bounty has featured in the films Treasure Island, Mutiny on the Bounty, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Seventeen people aboard HMS Bounty have abandoned ship off the coast of North Carolina amid Hurricane Sandy.

The captain gave the order for the crew to enter the lifeboats at 4:30 EST (9:30 GMT) and a rescue attempt by a US coastguard helicopter is under way.

The HMS Bounty Organisation said it would assess whether the ship could be saved but its concern was for the crew.

HMS Bounty is a replica of the original Bounty, famous for its ill-fated trip to Tahiti and the West Indies in 1789.

Tracie Simonin, director of the HMS Bounty Organisation, said that the ship began to experience difficulties at about 18:30 EST (23:30 GMT) on Sunday when it lost power and was unable to continue "de-watering".

"At that time we contacted the US coastguard for assistance," she said.

"A C-130 plane was sent to their position, which was 90 miles south-east of Cape Hatteras, and then at 04:30 EST this morning the captain ordered all hands to abandon ship.

"All 17 crew were accounted for in the liferafts and a US coastguard helicopter is on the scene rescuing them now."

She added: "As far as we know the ship is still upright and we're going to assess the situation to see if anything can be done to save the ship but at this point our main concern is with the crew."

Ms Simonin said everyone on board was American.

Re: HMS Bounty abandoned in Hurricane Sandy

geezuz--i knew when i saw their path headed right into the heart of sandy that there would be a follow up such as this--i hope all hands are healthy and whole and that the boat survives the mayhem from hell.. they are a brave crew.
they were sailing to st pete's on a schedule--i hope the bounty isnt lost.
this story will have follow up , as bounty either sinks or drifts onward to somewhere...

Sailing into a hurricane to meet a schedule? If that's true, this should be added to a 'worst seamanship ever' category.

I hope sometime we will hear what she was doing out there sailing to windward in such a well forecast weather event. Sailing to meet a schedule? #1 Bad Idea.
