yup, at the helm, standing up, in full uniform(assuming such), and staring straight ahead. no holding breath and no giggling either. well maybe a "wtf" or a feeling of "SOL" as the cold sea creeps up your pant legs.

I'm going to hold full holier than thou judgment till the full report comes out from the CG and not assume anything written by the press is unbiased and really true.

But far as people making statements of having argued for abandoning it would appear that the captain gave that command at the right right which was just as the ship was sinking and not sooner. Their was a recent thread with people on their soap boxes saying how you only abandon ship when it is time to step up into the life raft, which appear to be the case here. What would people be saying if the captain ordered abandon ship in the storm and everyone sit in their life rafts watching the ship ship away?

that is evidently what seems to have occurred with the mary celeste. ship survived, lifeboat folks didn't.

its an inquiry. a court of inquiry. it can recommend further actions by trial courts, or government agencies, or just may issue a findings report. does have a lot of influence on insurance companies, eventual law suits, and even criminal charges(although this is unlikely with the bounty unless she was carrying illicit cargo or some such).

eventually a findings report will be published by the CG and submitted to their department. the report, unless classified(green men from outer space) it will be published in the federal register or referenced in the FR to be accessed via the government printing office. most likely it will also be available at the CG website.

From the Los Angeles Times:
Captain rebuffed pleas to abandon Bounty amid Sandy, mate says
PORTSMOUTH, Va.--The captain of the doomed replica sailing ship HMS Bounty twice rebuffed his chief mate's desperate pleas to abandon ship as the vessel rolled and pitched in Hurricane Sandy's fierce winds and 25-foot seas, the mate testified Tuesday.

absolute rule of the sea, never abandon a floating vessel. as long as it floats, its safer than entering the seas. and no, you dont get sucked down with the ship unless your inside.

Completely concur. Authorities have found many boats abandoned and flaoting nicely after storms, months after her crew has taken to life rafts.

Only (continuing) troubling issues for me are reasons, timing, and final decision for departure and of course, Captain's apparent long term desires for hurricane encounters. just sayin'...
