Re: Merged Threads: HMS Bounty

Just reading through this thread and I feel very sad for the people onboard the (now) sunken vessel. Looked at some links and was amazed to find the attached graphic on the site "http://www.mutinywiththebounty.com/"

Maybe it's just me, but on the surface the only word I can use to describe this ill fated journey is "crazy"

Re: Merged Threads: HMS Bounty

Just a counterpoint here...

I find it hard to accept that the owners would put an inexperienced master on this ship. I find it implausible the the sailing plan was not considered and discussed with the owners. I expect that as an experienced master he knew the final decision to sail and every decision after that rested with him.

He is now presumably lost at sea and may he also rest in peace...

The key learning for me is that there is no such thing as 100% safety at sea and there is no boat that will protect you from all that mother nature has to offer.

We've lost, if not a brother, a kindred spirit of the sea and I for one won't second guess the events now or once the details start being shared.

There but for the grace of God and all that...

Please a little respect for this guy and a prayer for his loved ones...

A short bio on the captain:

TallShipBounty.org

and another news story with a plausible explanation of what he was attempting.

I do realize we were in high school at the same time, but you were an upperclassman. Just having some fun with ya Karen, but you deserve the reference to experience that "old salt" implies, and that is what I meant.

The replica HMS Bounty has been sunk by hurricane Sandy, one crew member is done in, the Captain missing. Here's a link to the article.
Off Cape Hatteras apparently.

I wonder how Old Ironsides is faring in this blow. She's in Charlestown, MA at the shipyard, from what I heard.

Re: Merged Threads: HMS Bounty

And twelve more people risked life and limb to go fetch them.
My thoughts for their families too, knowing their loved ones respond to rescue - . Not sure what the right word is.
I wouldn't have gone on the Bounty, I do know that.

It's interesting to think that these pictures are what Fletcher Christian and his crew of the Bounty must have seen after they landed on Pitcairn Island.

I was thinking how many sailors have seen this sight before, with only their memories to record it. Looking at the pictures, I have to remind myself that this isn't a movie set.

A bit of thread drift but another example of "journalists" spreading rumours. In this case I don't think it was even a "journalist", it was Chip the weatherman on CNN who started this one. They followed the rumour up with three minutes of pontificating on how the exchange would be down for a week and the world economy would be in chaos due to hedge funds not being able to beef up accounts for the month's end.
