Matt Rutherford Approaches Cape Horn

After leaving Annapolis in June, Matt Rutherford has sailed the NW Passage and is approaching Cape Horn...non stop on a 40 yr old Albin Vega. Amazing!!
Solo Around the America's Under Sail | An audacious attempt at sailing the Northwest Passage and circumnavigating entirety of both continents, to benefit Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating

Re: Matt Rutherford approaches Cape Horn

I've been checking in on his progress almost daily. Tough young man I wish him well around the horn
I don't think much about a boat that leaks as much as he says it does, as his bilge pump went out recently.

Well my experience is that most boats leak.... and that is before they sail thru the North west Passage, ride out several storms in the Bering Sea, and then cross the North and South Pacific!!!

We've obviously been on different boats.

IME most people don't set out for a challenging environment with a boat that requires pumping out every 5 hours........

Re: Matt Rutherford approaches Cape Horn

Well I don't know about your boating, but Isail about 20,000nm per year on many different boats, year in year out. I would consider it note worthy to see one with a dry bilge.....

Re: Matt Rutherford approaches Cape Horn

Matt is probably looking at the Horn about now and in the last few days he was doing 6.8 kt's at night.

He's made it around and has started turning north--in a 27 foot boat! Way to go, Matt!

Thanks, Hud. No idea how that happened. Regardless, an impressive saga.

Re: Matt Rutherford approaches Cape Horn

A resupply effort is being put together out of Recife Brazil. The boat is in pretty sad shape but still sailing. The current problems are complete lack of power (dead motor, dead wind generator) and down to one dying watermaker, which could prove fatal. They are asking for donations.
