Man's Boat Leads to Capture by Police

As you may have seen in the press, the FBI in the US have been searching for a man named Rockefeller who, in the middle of a divorce proceeding, grabbed his young daughter off the streets of Boston and fled in a black SUV. After a week the man was arrested in Baltimore and the girl reunited with her mother.

The "break" in the case was the discovery that the man had a 26' catamaran in Baltimore.

...the FBI created a ruse, luring Rockefeller from the apartment by calling him from a nearby marina to tell him his boat, a 26-foot catamaran, was taking on water. Upon leaving the apartment, he was immediately arrested.

I would guess some FBI agent owns a boat and knew that no boat owner would ignore such a call!

The FBI's intention was to capture him away from his daughter. I think that was a good call..........

I heard about this on my drive in this morning. Of course if he spent any time at CF he would know that catamarans don't sink and would have seen through the ruse.

The implication of course is that they knew exactly where he and his daughter were, the apartment, and they felt the need to separate him from his daughter before attempting an arrest rather than knowcking on the door. Why? Because he might hold her hostage? Harm her? etc. etc.

What a wicked world...

I agree it was a great plan that kept everyone safe.

I just hope that when they put the cuffs on him, someone remembered to tell him the boat was OK.

Shouldn't this be in the Multihull section?

Now yer just being bad... not surprising.

I was just trying to point out the wealth of information here and how he could have avoided capture if he had done some research.

Maybe they simply wanted to spare the daughter the memory of her father being arrested in front of her?

That Cat has been at the Anchorage Marina for over 15 years that I know of...it has never moved......the "mung" on the bottom must be attached to the bed of the harbor.

Unless the news just took a photo of the easiest cat they could find...they have been known to be wrong ya'know.

i know the boat i have looked at it many times riding my bike. i have thought it might be a fun boat, but the tillers are broke and i would not want to find out what it would cost to fix.... it might be cheap to buy right now, or maybe the slip because i am looking for one.

its a 4 min bike ride from my house, and its right on the path at the waters edge. if you all want pics let me know

L.A. sheriff links 'Rockefeller' to missing couple - CNN.com

"LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A man charged with kidnapping his daughter in Boston, Massachusetts, is a German who lived in the guesthouse of a Los Angeles-area couple who disappeared in 1985, a sheriff's spokesman said Monday."

Looks like it just gets better and better.
