Major Earthquake off Vanuatu - Tsunami Warning

Another major earthquake in the south pacific. I think it was about 10 minutes ago.

Another tsunami warning. If you're in the area, seek deep water.

Hopefully nobody is affected.

Ye - warnings mostly everywhere and N Cal some places evacuated already. Tomorrow comes we will see what happened (I hope nothing).

The tsunami warning was just cancelled for our location in Vava'u, Tonga.

We're in Oyster Bay, on the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu. We felt (at anchor!) 2 of the 3 big quakes this morning, and the local resort evacuated its guests and staff. The owner of the resort reported seeing the water level retreat, then flood back in before settling to a normal level, but we did not witness nor experience that.

Can you realy feel the shock when your on water?

Hi all, travelling with my 10 month old and husband to tonga on early nomvember, plan on sailing for a week. I dont know, given all the weather condition lately, if I should concider moving the trip for next year.....
I need advise from experienced sailors !!!

Yes it should be fine. If you are chartering in Neafu, Tonga, they will cal you in if there is a cyclone heading your way...

Mulatos, this is very unusal stuff you see going on here. vava'u is lovely for a cruising holiday with young family. You will be fine. Enjoy.

Yes, we were at the dock during a 6.8 quake. In a very well protected marina at night when boat traffic is done. It was weird, felt like someone was pumping the boat up and down, not violent but quicker than any boat wake ever. I went outside to look for a boat passing and all the tied up boats were going up and down and not a single boat to blame it on.
Apparently, people at a concert at the beach could barely stand(non-drinkers). We found out an hour later that it was a quake.

When we were in Neafu, Tonga in 2008 on a mooring ball I was awoken to what sounded like us sailing up over the mooring ball and in the line slipping along the bottom of the hull. After going topsides and seeing it was dead calm I had to rethink the mooring ball theory. However it was not until morning that we were informed that there was a quake during the night. My wife's family in France knew more about it than we did. In Neafu we kept the VHF off because of all the chatter so no warning from it.

Thankyou All for your advise, When it comes to weather you never know for certain ! We're going to give it a bit more thought ( specially because of our 10 month old) ... How many days of sialing would the vavau group take...will a week be ok ???...& Thankyou for the Beluga Diving advise , I had already contacted them !

If you could put Pacific Island Locations as Tonga , New Caledonia , Tahiti & Whirsundays in order of difficulty, how would you arrange them ? We want to do them all, but start with the easiest, to gain experience .. ( Were Dayskippers, and will be soon Offshore Skip )

Would Tonga be the best start ?

Depends how much you want to see of the group.
