Re: MacWester 26 and the 'hina-ous' Crew

Ouch. I'm putting off a bunch of stuff until the fall for just that reason.

arrived in falmouth!!!! finally

well we finally arrived in falmouth after a 3 day drift, the engine got us out of poole harbour, then died, due to either an injector pump problem or the piston rings having blow by and losing compression.

any way we decided to carry on under sail as we had a favourable forcast for the rest of the week, that is favourable for motorsailing!!!!

i think we set the record for the 140 mile passage,at four and a half days berth to berth, though the strongest wind we had was only 15 knots and that was only twice for about 12 hours, the rest of the passage was 0-10 knots!!!!

now that she is in her new home,i will be fitting a bigger engine that works!!
and a mast the correct size,as the one she has is way too small.

found her to be a very seaworthy little boat and now steers beautifully with the new skeg and larger rudder.

spent 5 weeks in the boat yard, but i was away for 2 doing a delivery on another boat, cost so far about £1000 but a lot of that was yard fees and driving up in the car.

now just have to sell my other little boat ,,,any one interested in a signet 20?

I was only talking about her yesterday! Glad she has found her new home.....although that plate of (what I can only guess is ) omelette and fish looks sooooooo wrong!

Re: MacWester 26 and the 'hina-ous' Crew

Hey guys! Im the chap who owned the Macwester and called her Hina! Im glad someone is looking after her after the guy I sold it to suddendly decided to abandon her at Poole after a difficult night in Studland Bay. Im chuffed you saved her, she was always a bit of a project and I just used what was free or cheap to get her out on the water and sailing! The paint scheme is a bit 'rasta style' as that is the colours I found in old tins at the tip!!! ha ha Did you sail her at all with the gaff rig? she would sail herself quite happily with some playing with the sails, good speed off the wind often near 6knots, but had to sail her quite free upwind. I had a great 2 yrs of fun with her, never gave me any problems at all, apart from the lack of a good engine.
Im down Falmouth every now and then, use to sail on the working boats a lot, I will keep an eye out for Hina when Im there next-if I recognise her?????She deserves to be cleaned up and made proper again with better gear. Take it easy guys-but looking at your photos your all good at that anyway-its the only way aint it!!!!!! cheers

Re: MacWester 26 and the 'hina-ous' Crew

Ha, yeah thats where I got her from, arh takes me back to the early days when I rigged her as a junk rigged schooner with tarp sails (lasted a year and got be up to chichester harbour) and having heated debates while trying to educate certian people in the yard (no names!) how junk rigs work! I scared them to death i think with Hina, but she was grand and I made lots of friends sailing her about Dorset and the Solent.
Will do, happy sailing Alex

Heh heh I'm glad to see this old lady get a remake. I enjoyed your tales and was wondering where you'd disappeared to.
