Last Watch - A Great One Left Us Today

Walter Cronkite died today. While just about everybody alive during the 50's through 80's knows him for his day job, Mr. Cronkite was a heckuva sailor, too.

He'll be missed.

Yes he will.

Fair winds and following seas, Walter.

He is one of the last that I feel did not have a personal agenda in his reporting.

So long Walter.

He was a great journalist. America completely trusted that man... I will never forget his official announcement of the death of JFK.

I ran into him once in Maine. His trawler was anchored next to us, and his generator was making too much noise to suit me. But when I found out it was Walter's boat, the noise stopped bothering me.

I remember reading one of his books several years ago on cruising the American coast. He gave a particularly good piece of advice -- "don't get a rock named after you."

As a kid, the CBS news was the de facto standard in our house. Tonight on the news cast they mention Walter Cronkite and I said "And thats the way it is, Friday July 17th 2009" and my roommate said "that's what he always said at the end" 1/2 a minute later they played his signoff.
Todays news is opionated commentaries. Mr Cronkite gave the facts without personal embellishment. They stated he was Americas most trusted man, and probably most Canadians shared that sentiment.

Most folks don't know that Walter was very involved with troubled youth and donated several boats to AMIkids - Home... Separating a troubled past from a bright future. I became aware of his support when I got involved with the Space Coast Marine Institute.

He was a great man and a dedicated sailor.

Fair winds Walter Cronkite, you will be missed.

I’ll never forget the winter Saturday morning enjoyment, and perhaps some illumination, I got from watching his historical re-enactments (the original ‘fake' news?) ...
"What sort of day was it? A day like all days, filled with those events that alter and illuminate our times... and you were there."

And of course his famous Tet Offensive editorial, that caused LBJ to say, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America".
