Jessica Watson's Round-the-World Voyage
This thread has been created to discuss the sailing aspects of Jessica's journey. There is nothing more to be said about whether she should or should not be out there. The fact is that she is out there.
She is a fellow sailor on a very exciting and challenging journey. As a community of cruisers and sailors we now owe her our community support.
Posts not related to her progress update and relating to her journey will be removed.
Thanks for your community support.

I'll take a fresh start.
I admire her courage and hope that she succeeds. Only Jessica is going to know her true situation at sea and I hope she makes sound decisions based on her perspective and not that of her parents or sponsors.

I'am sure all thoughts and actions are in her best interest...
Does anyone know how many sails she has brought with her ????

Two- both pink
In all seriousness, what are the rules of engagement on her journey. Can she accept help-such a new sail- if it is thrown to her by another boat? Or helicoptered in ?
Can she stop in a port- as long as she sails alone?
I am somewhat confused on what record she is going for.

Her goal is solo, nonstop, unassisted - similar to the 1968 Sunday Times race. She can anchor, but she cannot go ashore, allow anyone else on board, or take on any equipment, supplies or provisions. Obviously, in an emergency she could sacrifice the unassisted or nonstop goals and still achieve a solo circumnavigation.

Not sure on the first part but i dont think so...
The second she can anchor or even beach her boat and do repairs with no outside help..

I have never had any interest in doing a solo, nonstop, unassisted circumnavigation. Unless you’re in a race or have a chance at a record, I don’t know why anyone would want to do it. It is the antithesis of cruising.
But now that she’s on her way, I’m definitely a fan. Go, Jessica!

Whilst I wish her well, and will be interested to follow her progress (once it stops being a secret), can't say I feel I owe her any support, let alone any apology..........and do rather take umbrage at others claiming to offer these on my behalf.

I'd like to be one of the first to congratulate The Team on having had Ella's Pink Lady "moving along at over 8 knots for most of the last 24 hours" in a cruising displacement boat with a theoretical maximum speed of about 6.5 knots.
Like almost everyone else, I have surfed above hull speed in a displacement boat in a good blow, but never that consistently for that long, so I'm sure I owe an apology for being amazed

Ok, out of the loop here so fill me in. What day is she going to make the u-turn south? Have I missed it?
There is nothing, and I mean nothing, more fun than going faster than hull speed. Everything hums, the mast, the sails, the helm in your hands, even the deck beneath your feet, and the boat is totally in her element.
Former nay say er, now resigned to be a "go jessica" girl,
Erika

Sven,
I've averaged better than 10 kts over several hours in my 32' waterline boat with a theoretical hull speed of 7.5 kts. How did I do it, you ask?
