Re: Jamaica Warning
Sadly, I think you pretty much have to just assume that crime is going to be a problem in Jamaica. It is unfortunate, because by all accounts Jamaica should be one of the wealthiest nations in the Caribbean. Yet, they are not, almost entirely due to the crime problems (drug trade) that they suffer.

Same here. Was there once for two weeks. Only place in the Caribbean I was ever glad when it was time to leave. Had a guy trying to sell me weed 30 seconds off the plane, while still in the airport. Had about a thousand other people try and sell me drugs. Came about as close to being robbed in Montego Bay as I ever want to get again.
A shame, because it could be a really nice place.

It is a beautiful island. The lush mountain profile is quite a dramatic contrast if making landfall after being in the flat rocky georgraphy of the Bahamas. Even Columbus commented on its beauty.
But the intense racial/social divisions, constant hustling/hassling, and crime make it really unpleasant out on the street...should you choose to venture out from behind the walled/fenced compounds where the more afluent spend their time.

Re: Jamaica Warning
I don't mean to feed the Jamaican hate train here but I agree with the above. The only Carib location I've ever been that I was glad to leave. AGGRESSIVE drug salesmen every 20ft. People constantly ripping you off. People demanding your money like you owe it to them. Scams left and right. I've been alot of places, but never have I felt utterly attacked so much as I did while in Jamaica.

Re: Jamaica Warning
So what you are saying is that Jamaica would be a great place if there weren’t any Jamaicans?

Only if you are saying all Jamaicans are criminals. If so, I think you are the only one saying that.
But, yes, Jamaica, like most places would be much, much better off without their criminal element, whatever that percentage of people it is.

Re: Jamaica Warning
It's not a hate train in anyway. I used to or still am quite fond of Jamaica the way I saw Jamaica. However it is important to note when the authorities are the ones sending out the warnings.
I actually have several friends who are Jamaican and travel back and forth quite often, one is building a home using his savings in Mandeville, but even they say that things are getting bad at home.
It is sad to see this really, let us not judge but be wary.
Oh and this goes without saying about any culture, guys there are good people everywhere, it's the $hitheads who are simply louder. Isn't that why we cruise away from our own cities?

Re: Jamaica Warning
To me, one of the positive things about Jamaica and Jamaicans, is that it is such a polite culture. I was constantly amused, that you could arrest the worst, and most violent Jamaican around, but he would still be unfailingly polite. Just the way they are raised, I guess. One of the neat things about different cultures, is that they are different.

Re: Jamaica Warning
The vast majority of Jamaicans are great and wonderfully caring people, especially where it's not crowded. There just seems to be a stronger criminal element that increasingly presses in on everyday life as you get closer to Kingston.
Kingston is one city I plan to never go back to. Ever.

Re: Jamaica Warning
What happened to Jamaica is a true tragedy.
However it started a very long time ago.
I actually lived in Jamaica in the late 70's when the political parties (JLP and the PNP) were fighting resulting in much bloodshed. Since then I have only sailed to Port Antonio and although it brought back many memories I was ready to leave after a short stay.
So lets make sure that we don't forget about the political corruption that led these people to where they are today.
Desperate people do desperate things like so many other places in this crazy world. You may just want to look at inner cities in the good old USA as an example.
