Sorta kinda depends on the boat, the conditions, and the crew, don't you think?

Yea cause my 6 yr old on the dog watch solo'ing loves to have the spini up and surf over 15kts at night....

....um no. When me and the lads are offshore racing on same boat, of course.

Sorry OP, a silly and bit of a troll statement that is totally dependant on context, but i am sure we will discuss it ad nauseum for 40 pages cause it has a hint of the word du jour "bluewater" attached...

Damn cool pic though!

I think they really aught to get the sails up. Its clear to see they are sailing on a reefed main and jib. Just too cautious those french men!

Re: I Guess Drouge Chutes-sea Anchors Are Obsolete

I think it is a truly awesome picture. Mind you, my boat has little in common with this race horse. So yes, I have a sea anchor. My ability will not be as much of knowing how to use it as much as knowing how to avoid the conditions requiring it (hoping I don't have to eat my words down the road). It is really cheap to hook my Lap-top to my SSB and download weather maps and information to allow me to make a conservative decision while voyaging.

My first impressions on seeing that photo were not only the above. The jib is not set for best speed and why isn't the spinnaker up?

Non sequitur is Latin for "it does not follow."

Re: I Guess Drouge Chutes-sea Anchors Are Obsolete

I know I'm really going to get in a bee's nest for this one, but I think It may be photoshopped. The main reason is the waves are all going in one direction except the waves right next to portside, they are breaking at a 90 degree angle with the rest of the waves. If you look carefully at the color of the sea, I think it changes color abruptly at that point. It could happen that way of course, it just looks weird. Also there is no spray coming from the bow, which I think would be happening if it was coming off the wave fast enough to be in the air. Just food for thought....
