ssm, I hear a lot of people saying those kinds of things. They are usually not the people who will suffer from the experience...

You abviously have not read the latest People!! I you had any idea what Sandra is going through you would know why Obama is going through such great lengths to divert attention away from her.....and to this so called "oil spill".

I personally dont even think it ever happened

Speaking of perspective...

US consumption: ~20 million barrels/day
Most wildly optimistic estimate of total oil in GoM: 15 billion barrels

20 m b/d * 365 d/y = ~7.3 billion barrels /year.

Entire volume of oil in Gulf of Mexico = ~2years consumption.

Worth it? What do YOU get? We all know what the oil companies get for drilling in YOUR Gulf of Mexico.

Look at the plaxe where Exxon Valdiez spilled. Thats pristine again.

Nature is able to handle things from volcanoes to errant oil dribbles.
Prince William Sound is hardly pristine today. The tragedy in the Gulf is horrible and we most likely will never see a complete recovery. We will all be affected by this, regardless of where you live.

And of course, just because you don't see something anymore, doesn't mean it's gone. Oil broken down by bacteria hasn't gone away. It's working its way through the food chain.

Hi Craig,

Yes, its obviously much more serious than when I wrote that post 1 month ago.

I still have faith in man and nature. BP is working flat out at fixing it and will continue to do so.
The alternative is to go back to a horse and buggy or be behoven to the Middle East. Its not an easy choice.

Look at the oil reserve and oil consumption numbers and explain how we can ever be free from the middle east. You can't. Nevermind that all oil is simply sold on the open market. It's not like American oil is somehow earmarked for American consumption.

You also don't need to return to horse and buggy. That's a false dichotomy put into the public consciousness by the oil companies. Plug-in hybrid cars and nuclear fission baseline power are two proven existing technologies, that are really probably inevitable to become dominant, (barring some unforseen technology breakthrough). It's really only a matter of how much worse it has to get before we realize it.

For most of the rest of the world the Gulf Coast (and Alaska) is a long way away. and what happens there neither matters nor impacts on decisions made.

Am I going to give up a dependence on oil because of the environmental impact? or some locals getting the sh#tty end of the stick economically? Well, I already don't base my decisions on where I source my £1 t-shirts and cheap trainers (sneakers ) from on such things (out of sight, out of mind).............so I rather suspect not

I am probably not alone in such decisions - whether a good or bad thing long term is another matter.................

But FWIW I will freely give up oil when the future of personal transport finally arrives..............in the shape of Hover Boots Size 9's please

Who the *#@%'s Sandra Bullock...
So far I've seen racism, hypocrisy and assorted other crap on here... why should ME countries be allowed to collapse "Back into dust bowls where they belong".. bet some of your stocks n shares are invested with links to them and if not you made your money working for companies riding on the backs of their produce..
As to the race for new oil.. that's fueled by the 'American Dream' roughly translated as screw as much as you can from the rest of the world, protect yourself, and when you f*#k up blame someone else...
Like the guy on here questioning the race/nationality of the rig workers... what are you trying to say mate.. "It was the Taliban and Al-Qaeda"..
Nothing to do with the corrupt US regulators too busy watching 'Porno' in their offices or holidaying around the world on 'Kickbacks' to get out there and kick asses.. oh sorry.. thats not the American way.. unless they're "Ragheads.."
I've sat in a Newark taxi and watched with horror the 'econo-meter' reach a maximum of 10mpg.. and that was downhill.. average was 7mpg.. and you start crying when the price of fuel goes up...??
You've a lunatic bitch demanding drilling in Alaska's pristine wildernesses.. yeah.. another lying Politician who reckoned she could see Russia from her window.. and the 'Morons' believed her..
The rest of the world is paying the taxes etc already for your greed and pollution.. what we pay for a litre.. you guys pay for a gallon..
Your car industries have bought up all the patents on new technology transport and have to have their arms twisted to develop them.. why..? simple.. they can still screw big bucks out of the crap they sell...
"F*#K YOU JACK.. I'M FIREPROOF"
Look to your own house and stop throwing stones.. as for Obama.. he's just another Politician.. just a different colour.. but like the rest he sold his soul to get there..
Sadly it's "Business as Usual" at the ***** House and Congress...

And I guess I've just stuffed up my Visa Waiver.... LMAO.

Well, I don't blame our American cousins!!

Any patch of oil floating on the sea is a minor blob compared to the environmental damage being hurled on the planet by the '3rd world'. Their total lack of garbage/rubbish/trash control and their deforestation in a massive way that included the Malaysian and Indonesian rape of Borneo where there is now bugger all rainforest and a huge expanse of but one tree: the oil palm.

Go float across the sea of plastic laid down by Asia by blamed on the USA to Borneo ahve have a look.

Anyway, BP, go look up the shareholders and you'll see a fair bit of B in the BP.
Sure the western world hasn't done the absolute best, and sure we could put vastly more money into alternatives research, but don't blame the good guys all the time.

And while we ponder and call this engineering problem 'crap' you are just letting the door open to ratbags like that Iranian fellow who will pollute the world in a much more devastation way..... with a half life of 20,000 years.

Be Aware, America. When the cost of Crude increase a little bit more they'll be digging up the huge deposits of Shale Oil in the US continent to feed your Gas Guzzling Air Conditioning.
Don't you folks have windows?

Folks, most of you realize that we here on CF generally insist that threads and posts keep to the topic near and dear to all our hearts--cruising and boating. This thread has lost it's way by that standard--it's been getting increasingly political and personal for some time now. The moderator team has discussed the situation, and has decided that the thread is well beyond the limits as defined in our Community Rules.

For that reason, we're closing the thread. Thanks for your understanding.
(I've actualy plagerized this from Hud...He has a silver tounge)
