Most wildly optimistic estimate of total oil in GoM: 15 billion barrels

20 m b/d * 365 d/y = ~7.3 billion barrels /year.

Entire volume of oil in Gulf of Mexico = ~2years consumption.

Worth it? What do YOU get? We all know what the oil companies get for drilling in YOUR Gulf of Mexico.

Yes, its obviously much more serious than when I wrote that post 1 month ago.

I still have faith in man and nature. BP is working flat out at fixing it and will continue to do so.
The alternative is to go back to a horse and buggy or be behoven to the Middle East. Its not an easy choice.

Look at the oil reserve and oil consumption numbers and explain how we can ever be free from the middle east. You can't. Nevermind that all oil is simply sold on the open market. It's not like American oil is somehow earmarked for American consumption.

You also don't need to return to horse and buggy. That's a false dichotomy put into the public consciousness by the oil companies. Plug-in hybrid cars and nuclear fission baseline power are two proven existing technologies, that are really probably inevitable to become dominant, (barring some unforseen technology breakthrough). It's really only a matter of how much worse it has to get before we realize it.

For most of the rest of the world the Gulf Coast (and Alaska) is a long way away. and what happens there neither matters nor impacts on decisions made.

Am I going to give up a dependence on oil because of the environmental impact? or some locals getting the sh#tty end of the stick economically? Any patch of oil floating on the sea is a minor blob compared to the environmental damage being hurled on the planet by the '3rd world'. Their total lack of garbage/rubbish/trash control and their deforestation in a massive way that included the Malaysian and Indonesian rape of Borneo where there is now bugger all rainforest and a huge expanse of but one tree: the oil palm.

Go float across the sea of plastic laid down by Asia by blamed on the USA to Borneo ahve have a look.

Anyway, BP, go look up the shareholders and you'll see a fair bit of B in the BP.
