As for the whales, I'll stick to watching them in documentaries. A young (30 footer, maybe) sperm whale surfaced off the stern of a Bristol 45.5 I crewed on in 2009, and when I saw that head more or less the size of a Honda Civic doing about 8 knots a boat length back, I thought "even that wee bugger could seriously damage even something as heavily laid up as an '80s Bristol."

A humpback vs. a 34 footer is no contest.

Wow. I was just there in Hoonah during the last week of June. I actually showered in the marina and saw all the sailboats there. We saw many breaching whales when we were fishing there but the odds of actually getting hit by one must be incredibly low given the immenseness of the area. Dont want to stir things up but just maybe they tried to get as close as they could (photo opp?) and then it happened. Im sorry about the boat but very glad they are alive. Knowing the area they are very lucky.

Just got finished watching the PBS documentary about Herman Melville and the early whaling industry: Nantucket, New Bedford, The Essex, etc. It's good stuff. If you haven't seen it yet, it's worth watching. Gotta find that old copy of Moby Dick to read it again.

You got that right. Once on a kayak trip we were sitting on a beach, sorting gear. Idly watching two humbacks which were cruising just off the beach. We would see them periodically come up, spout, then go under. Nothing too spectacular.

Then suddenly, totally without warning, first one then the other came straight up nearly totally out of the water. Almost a "Free Willy" moment. It would have made an awesome photo, but it happened so suddenly one wouldn't have been fast enough to push the shutter even if one had the camera in hand. One of those times you turn to your companions and ask 'did that really just happen....or did I only imagine it?'

We saw the same two whales the next day while we were out paddling. Believe me, we gave them plenty of distance from our kayaks!

I thought about that " I need a woman", decided you probably need at least 2 if not 3. One to clean, one to cook, and one to beat you over the head anytime you left your shorts on the galley counter....

Sailboats do tend to be a bit on the quiet side of boating... Maybe there should be a Sonic warning device to warn the whales that we are there. Not one that is screaming but one that is a gentle nudge away to a safe distance from the sailboats.

As we walk by where MarkJ's boat is moored we would see a sign stating: Young female Cook wanted, no experience required.

Saw one similar, posted on a small commercial fishing boat.
