Actually that Japanese video appears to be onto something. The power used could be supplied by solar or other power. It doesn't have to be fossil fuel that provides it.

Yes, I certainly do hope it works. I just do not believe technology is going to save us so we can go on consuming at our current rate.

Exellent sentiment ViribusUnitas, but people have fought battles, employed genicide and murder and as the multitudes breed and increase more genicide and murder will folow. I guess its good to hang on to something, other than the depressing thought of people killing each other to prove a useless point. Few battles ever achieved such significant outcome that it actually warrented all those that were killed.

I sincerely doubt if people will actualy come together on this but it is a good idea as any! Almost gospel and with that there is nothing wrong!

I never understood why Scandinavians are the only ones that do a mandatory deposit on most consumables. They see a %90 return on all them as well. That is almost hard to believe, imagine that for a moment, %90 of the cans and bottles purchased by consumers are put into automated return receptacles, not the closest trash bin.

It makes the recycling process much easier and rather than unenforceable fines, it pushes people to return their empty bottles and cans with the best motivator of all, getting your money back.

In truth, as has been pointed out already, even if North America and many other countries did this, China on its own would still outshine the entire premise with their enormous contribution to floating plastics alone.

I find it intriguing that this thread has so many pages of people lamenting the environment and the damage we do but only 2 posts (1 in jest) have commented positively or negatively on my suggestion of a CF clean up day.

I am not sure what that say's about me?

I suspect a lot of people (me) have become a bit jaded by all the "clean up this" and "clean up that" days. The first Earth Day was how long ago ... and the mess get worse every year. I do my part to not make things any worse but I don't see another clean up day making an impact. I know ... every little bit helps but do they really make a difference other than make you feel good?

I think the operative word is "we". The earth will change and will survive I'm sure. I'm just not sure Man will be the catalyst and survive himself, at least not in his present form.
