Up here in VA it is much the same - we put a few peels in our own veg and flower gardens near the plants under the mulch. They are always gone to nothing within a few weeks during the summer. We generate about a gallon of peels etc a week as we both eat several fruit/veg smoothies every day. The majority go to our organic gardner friend to feed his worms - he says the worms will eat the peels faster than we can make them.

Just sailed from Annapolis to Norfolk and hardly saw any litter at all out on the water, maybe a soda bottle and... well, that's about all that comes to mind. Maybe a little more near marinas on the shoreline, but not so much to seem important.

The shorelines and beaches I go to don't seem very littered either, although on the rare occasions its thicker, I pick up the occasional bagful if I have time.

If there is a lesson in all of this...its going to force humanity to grow up, and it's probably what we are all having to confront...now and for the rest of our lives...i sincerely believe we are sitting on the cusp of a paradigm shift in its infant stages and
its part of our evolutionary heritage...the transformation, the shift, the suffering, despite how bleak it appears from this present perspective, its going to force a kind of growing up and maturity. its the only direction that humanity can go, the truth is far bigger than

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 1976 = 4,161,861,439 people
2011= 6,946,043,989

That is a 60% increase.

convince people to recycle, perhaps so much a pound, money talks.
Of course likely not to pay well, but some people will work for peanuts.

Envion Oil Generator turns plastic waste into oil

The ground-breaking Envion Oil Generator (EOG) gave its first public performance at the Montgomery County Solid Waste Transfer Station in Derwood, Maryland recently. The EOG can be fed almost any petroleum-based waste plastic and will convert it into synthetic light to medium oil for less than USD$10 per barrel. As with crude oil, the synthetic oil can then be processed into commercial fuels or even back into plastic.

There has been some movement to propose factory like ships to farm those pacific piles of plastics and waste, but I dunno any movement there. Then there is the micro plastic pieces that gave desintergrated that cannot easily be recovered
