Hans Klaar Jailed
was shocked to see this, since ive know the family most of my life, one of the icons of the indian ocean.
i remember the case but, would never have tarred him with that brush, the family touched the live's of many people, and were probably indirectly responsable for the exodus of many cruising yachts from south africa in the early 80' and 90's

Interesting. I always considered him an icon as well, but sounds like there may have been a darker side.

remembering the case,at the time,we were in the comores,i think in his mind he was innocent,so never invested in good council, belive that the girl was a wannabe gold digger, she after all rowed out to his yacht on the moorings with him ,then cried rape the next day.......
saw hans and katy in tahiti in 2002,he did not seem like a hunted man then, especially in an eu country.......

I think I'd like to read the doctor's book when she finishes it.
Rough character in rough situations, by the sound. I have no opinion on his guilt, but a man who abandons his family isn't much of a man in my books, no matter how good a sailor he is.

" Violence and crime are the dark, piratical side of ocean sailing. Sailors have altercations that are sometimes settled brutally. Yachts are stolen and men and women fall overboard, or are shot and buried on desert islands...."
If this is the standard of her writing... I think i will pass...

iv’e known hans for the last 30 years, have sailed about 7000 miles with him, sailed with his father on maria jose and other boats,
we were the first to hear about what happend in durban in 96,this woman volantarily came out to his boat with him after meeting him in a club, they spent the night together that much is true, the rest i belive is the fantasy of a young girl who thought she had hit the jackpot, thinking she could blackmail hans for her own financial gain.
unfortunately hans in his innocence didn’t get proper legal council, beliveving in his innocence ,he thought it would blow over, unfortunately things got blown out of preportion by female actavists and felt the full force of the law at the time,he did the only thing he knew and sailed out of a bad situation.
i belive this is a gross miscarrige of justice.
dr martanique stillwell, possibly ive met you but don’t recall you,you seem to have a very large axe to grind, looking at your profile on the net, self publacism seems to be your aim, hans seems to be one of your vehicles.
having spent many months with hans on board various vessels,in the company of hans and my self and our respective girl friends, and later wives over a period of nearly 30 years.
i find your claims hard to belive even if you were immature at the time.

Small world. I met Ernst and his family when I was a member of the PYC in Durban. I remember helping him clean up coins that he retrieved from treasure he found. If my memory is correct, his daughter Inge bought Scallywag, a steel sloop from my best friend's son Frogg who got the boat from his dad Alfie.

There's no need for moderation here.
Innocence and ignorance are not feasible defense strategies. Each of us impacts other people's lives through our actions and will ultimately have to take responsibility for those actions.
"Ernst kept arms aboard the junk and urged my father to do the same. His ideas about educating children were straightforward. If his boys could navigate and sail, he said, what reason was there to teach them anything else?"
And our ancestors will be held responsible for their actions and their consequences in the after-life. Makes sense, right, you screw up someone's life and then cop out by dying?
Values, morality and integrity are not inbred - they are taught. Hans was not blessed in this area, and a potential partner should have paid attention to these deficits.
So the fault for what happened lies on both sides ... end of story.

I can find no evidence supporting your condemnation of Dr Martinique Stilwell.

People often don't 'know' immeadiate family.... the same also applies for friends...
There's a type who while great drinking and carousing buddies are capable of turning on you as fast as flicking a light switch... been on the recieving end a coupla times... and an arrogant egotistical young man who believes he's entitled to the world is capable of rape.
Pelagic... the Indian Ocean is a whole different place to the Pacific and Atlantic... still very much frontier territory and mentality...

I know neither party or even heard of either until recently.
but this quote lifted from the Independent article might be something to do with the comments
“One night on the beach that summer, I learned to my detriment that Hans was not very good at listening when a woman said ‘no’,” said Stilwell in the Mail and Guardian newspaper this week.
no judgement on my part either way, yet, that is up to the courts.
