Re: Guess not all boat people are nice!

I once saw an extremely noisy ocean racer type of powerboat named "Rude". I thought the name was perfect.

Did anyone see the movie "Dead Calm"? Billy Zane was not a nice boater in that one. Nicole Kidman had to shoot him with a flare gun to straighten him out.

Re: Guess not all boat people are nice!

Human nature. Unfortunately for some, the minute law and order is diminished or non existing, fear and greed take over. Fortunately there are so many others that rise in times of crisis. There are so many that rise above and beyond. It is not often you hear about these. I have always been surprises how in times of crisis some you thought would rise, do not, and some you thought would not, do! Have you given any thought as to how you would react? Would you share your last bottle of water with a stranger? Would you be able to put your prejudices aside? Crises brings out the worst and the best! Have a nice day!

Re: Guess not all boat people are nice!

So the vessel has no state registration and the last federal registration (documentation) was in 2004...and the FWC and USCG both managed to miss this boat for 12-13 years now?!

Sounds like a great opportunity for salvage. Or maybe not, between municipal claims, looters, and a solid felon who might contest things.

There's a good start for Carl Hiaasen's next novel here. Or maybe a Tim Dorsey (Serge A. Storm) one.

What an insightful comment. Kinda hits hard at "those boaters that categorise"...

Nobody said "all" or even most.

Just my experience a higher proportion of not-nice, at least compared to my time in the Caribbean.

Re: Guess not all boat people are nice!

I remember, years ago, a man and wife crewed on a rather large yacht.
They wanted the yacht so they tied the owner and his wife to an anchor and tossed them overboard.
They were caught. What the sentence was, I do not remember.

At a book signing in Tampa someone asked Hiaasen where he gets his ideas. He said "The daily news, you can't make this kind of stuff up. You folks in Tampa even contribute. You had a stripper who had a breast implant stop a bullet and save her life. Who could make that up?"

Unfortunately he is right.

I agree, at 75 I've become an angry old man. Don't get me wrong, I am still nice to nice people, but if I see a problem I shout out! Like the plastic in our seas. Never mind I will not be around much longer!

Can anyone define and/or quantify "rich"? If not. How can we compare more or less empathy?
