The guys who do the real research (retired and current Fire Chiefs of most Aussie States) categorically disagree with you. I guess that doesn't make them right but somehow they seem more believable.

Fires in recent years are more extensive, occur more often, burn hotter and are more unpredictable than those of the past.

The main reasons why now there are less loss of life and assets are simple. We now have more resources - personnel, ground assets, air assets, better access, better training, better techniques and way way better communications to nothing of better understanding on how to defend ourselves. If you have ever been are the pointy end of fire fighting or have property threatened by large scale fires in the last decade, you would know this. If you haven't, then you have only read stuff and that stuff isn't always factual - rather it is often politically motivated and therefore suspect.

Actually, their track indicates they may just be trying to get far enough out into the Gulf Stream to avoid reverse flows and pick up NE flow....Based on these water temp readings.

should be on the other side of it already or pretty soon before the stronger winds arrive.
looks like winds could get quite strong over the next 48 hrs then backing to the north allowing them to head east again

i hope she realises if you push the boat too hard they break, and they dont have that multi million pound back up team on shore if they lose the mast or an endless sail wardrobe for blown out sails.

A pertinent fact that deserves to be quoted:

"The 1895-1903 drought period was probably Australia's worst to date, in terms of both its severity and area - affecting practically the whole of Australia at various times but more persistently in parts of eastern and central Australia. Stock and crop losses were apparently the highest in Australian history."

According to the graph you posted a few pages back showing avg. global temps it was 1.0-1.2ºC cooler in the period of the 1895-1903 Australian drought. But then I doubt such facts will prevent some from automatically blaming the current drought & fires on MMGW/CC.

How realistic is their Dec. 2nd deadline for making Gibralter? By my count that's an 18-day crossing.

Edit: Just saw that you had already answered that one in the negative in the other thread. Yeah, 18 days seemed kinda unrealistic from what I've read, but maybe their Outremer can exceed expectations if/when the wind becomes more favorable.
