Coincidentally I am currently reading "Treasured Islands" by Kenneth Bain who for some years was a Finance Commissioner for the BVIs sent from London to deal with their budgetary and corruption problems. He says it was nearly impossible to apply our concepts of "justice" to any of the islands as they mostly live by family/relatives codes and morals, i.e. it is not the guilt or innocence that matters but who the victim and the perpetrator are related to on the island.

so, does not look like robbery but targeted this particular person.

There must be more to this story but we will never know.

Long string of theft, robbery, assault, rape and murder in St. Vincent.

How do you reach that conclusion..??
Did I miss something in the report..???
One thing I did notice however.. that boat is anchored way to close to shore..
I tend to anchor just a tad further than I can swim freestyle before getting winded.. and I was a competitive swimmer in my youth.
Most islanders tho' surrounded by water are not great swimmers and 500metres or more from the nearest point of shore is discouraging.
One could always arrange suitable security however.. keep a container with bloody entrails in your fridge and chuck some over the stern before you crash..

What possible info do you have that makes you draw that conclusion. Or does it make you feel safer if you blame the victim? To me it sounds like the many other boardings for robbery with violence included. Not sure why cruisers do St Vincent, or for that matter St Lucia. There's plenty of other places to go.

Exactly,... this part of the world is so in-bred that the thief stealing the motor off your dinghy may be a relative of the Chief of Police.

Very sad, we were there last Tuesday, that Island will suffer until King Ralph is gone. He and his Government actively promote intolerance. BTW that was a file Picture of the Bay

That's one way to use the term 'in-bred' ...

Sad news tho

@Boatman: that's just a stock photo - but your point is still valid

I know.. just used it as an example.. same as the half serious joke about the entrails.. the sharks might hang around for breakfast.. and I do enjoy that 'Wake me up' dive off the cabin top.
Nuku Hiva had sharks come in at certain times of the day when the fishermen gutted and cleaned their catch on the jetty.. some big buga,s as well.. was worried for some new arrivals one avo when the woman jumped of the stern as some sharks came in past where I was anchored.. needless to say I did not have my morning swim.
In fact I have not swum in the S Pacific.. anywhere.. even when my prop fouled off Tassie.. called the VRS and asked if it was safe to go over to clear it and they advised against.. so I drifted all night.. luckily it cleared itself by morning.. great big clump of kelp.
Kinda suspect they were tugging my strings about Great Whites in the area but...

Re: German killed this morning, St Vincent

It's the same thing with Eric Sommer, the guy who has been in jail since 2012 without being charged for beating up an intruder on his boat. I think he's still in jail.

The deceased thief has relatives high up in the St Lucian Police Dept.

The man, unemployed, was known as an adopted to drugs, dealer and occasionally pimp. Dangerous when drugged, but as it seems "protected" by members of his family, high graded in the St. Lucian police.

Re: German killed this morning, St Vincent

Sommer's biggest mistake was singing like a canary. He told the police everything when he should have kept his mouth shut. Never, ever, ever talk to the police. Make them prove that you were even in the anchorage.

Watch out for lawyers too. I had a friend in Cartagena that was accused by a prostitute of having hitting her. The policeman, prosecutor, and the girl wanted each a sizable payoff; then his lawyer went to the other side and said she wanted a piece of the payoff herself.

I wouldn't use a lawyer in the Caribbean; there are American lawyers in Miami that represent and are licensed for every single country in the Caribbean. I'd bring one of those in.

Lets not get obsessed with it just being a problem 'with the natives' though..
A CF member had two European crew and an Aussie skipper allegedly try and blackmail her halfway across the Atlantic into paying a sum of money or they'd detour and abandon her..
Another Caucasian crewed for couples crossing from Panama.. killed them at sea then sailed to Ecuador anchored up then headed back to Panama City for the next victims.. he had 4 boats anchored up before he was caught.. there's rogues of every shade..
Maybe Jedi remembers the case.. being a Shelter Bay man.. who Tanqueray outa ran...

Jedi figured boatman is far away enough to risk buying a new bottle

We also had that Spanish pirate who killed people in Portobelo and San Blas for their boats... killed a good friend of mine... and almost managed to disappear into the Darien. Caught him though and he's rotting in jail now.
