I am not a fan of the CG's or the water patrol here either. Both act as petty tyrants, incapable of not exercising their small powers incessantly. I respectfully disagree. If criminal charges are justified, they should be brought, and the guilty should be punished.

The charges will be justified or not depending on whether the CG boatsmen were operating their boat without an appropriate degree of care. They should be held to exactly the same standard we would be, in case we ran down another boat and killed someone on the water.

There are some cases of fatal accidents on the water where this is just a tragic accident which no one could have avoided; there are others where a criminal degree of negligence was involved. In the latter case, the guilty should be punished. That's civilization.

This accident is a real tragedy and if there are charges to be brought against the coast guard for some justified reason than so be it.
But personally what I find to be a real safety issue within San Diego Harbor at all times is the fact that there is NO SPEED LIMIT within the harbor. I personally am amazed that more fatal accidents do not happen when you see how fast boats move through this harbor. The wakes alone in this harbor could flip over a good size boat....it is ridiculous. Fixing the speed limit in San Diego seems to be a good first step in dealing with some of these problems. That is not to say the Coast Guard still would not feel justified in these high speeds but honestly as it stands right now high speed is just expected anywhere and everywhere in San Diego harbor.

The whole "There ought to be a law" mentality aggravates me, we already have so many rules in our world that it is suffocating. Rules don't stop accidents, if it did then the USCG who go by the Collregs, would have been following the rules regarding,"Safe speed." And the rule about "Proper lookout." And the one about maneuvering in restricted visibility. Which until recently the USCG did not consider darkness "Restricted visibility". The people responsible for the accident will carry that burden the rest of their lives, as will the survivors. Nothing will be solved by imposing a bunch of new rules for the rest of us to be following. If you don't use good judgment while underway, then no rule will change that reality. If you don't care then a posted speed limit will not change that either, so all that ends up happening is the rest of us have one more regulation we have to be ruled by, there are more than enough regulations in this world thank you very much.

From today's 'Lectronic Latitude, comes word that the accident in San Diego involving a speeding Coast Guard vessel may have had some surprising contributing factors:

"The National Transportation Safety Board recently revealed that an unspecified number of crewmembers aboard the Coast Guard vessel that collided with a small boat in San Diego Harbor on December 20 were either texting or talking on their cell phones."

Yeah I heard this the other day on the news here. Apparently the guy at the helm was texting as he was flying across the harbor. Cell phones were way too new when I was in the Navy but I could absolutely imagine guys killing time all over the place with them when they're in range.

I'm sure as soon as an aircraft carrier comes within cell range from a deployment literally tens of thousands of texts are sent out within a few minutes.

2 accidents?

Pardon me for jumping in. But, is this a different accident than the Navy running down a dive boat off the the San Diego coast? Or is this just updated information and it's really the same accident?

Navy rundown was a dive boat out in open water, this was a Coast Guard boat (several months ago, I think 4th of July or Christmas?) that ran down a boat in San Diego Harbor and a kid on the civilian boat that was hit died.

It wasn't the Fourth of July, it was last Christmas during the Parade of Lights in the harbor. Uhm . . . scrolling up to the first post sometimes helps when one wants more info.
