Did you read the comments left below the item? It shows the standards of the express readers, very sad.............. I just don't see why they cant wait till there are say 40 or 50 yachts then do an organised convoy or say ok we will do 2 yacht convoys a year and people organise for them. It would be very simple and not consume too much resources.

The Russians shoot these bxxxxxxs.
What I do not understand why they went there. Everyone is aware of the potential
danger.

Still this is a very very bad situation and should not be allowed to continue.
Simple fishermen do not or should not carry automatic weapons.

I want to go that way sometime. Now I can not.

Its a 60ft yacht that could take the SA route easily.. easier than a 36ftr anyway... they probably want to tick the Pyramids and Giza of their 'LIST'..... Suez is not the only way...

Seems to me, if I were of the pirating nature with heavy weapons, mother ships etc., that a convoy of unarmed sailboats in numerous numbers would be the mother load.

I meant an escorted convoy....... or a bloody well armed one.... nb its 20,000k round the horn and only 6000k the other way to eastern med and i wouldnt think a journey round africa would be much safer.

Exactly my thought as well. Like shooting fish in a barrel, as they say.

They don't even want to use the IRTC. They want a Navy ship to escort them up the Yemini coast and, as you know, Coalition navy is not allowed into Yemini territorial waters.

The coargo ship convoys that go along the IRTC each day according to thewir speed (the slowest convoy being 10 knots) don't have a navy ship as personal escort. They do have a ship thats covering all the convoys of the day, and they are going through each 20nm or 40nm box where another navy ship is.

Their best protection is to try to coincide with the days convoys. As we have seen from this years stats once they are inside the IRTC they are fine. Its just getting there thats dangerous.

I wonder if there is a profit making opportunity for someone. If the Royal Navy won't take on escort responsibilities it might be worth it for some enterprising person to provide the service.

Me thinks not long before they end up taken by the Yemeni Forces... they may smile as they take your money at the souviner shops... don't mean they like rich condecending 'unbelievers'.... you should hear what interpreters have been known to say... would not surprise me if the Somali's are not admired, even respected further afield than you may realise

Hypothetically, or maybe not. I don't see why some former or retired spec ops person(s) couldn't make it work. There is already a company who is hiring those guys for ship protection. I know because my husband was approached.

It has already been posted on another thread, the pirates knew they were coming. One of the leaders of the pirate gang left a week before they got there for the sole purpose of looking for and capturing the s/v crew.

They were in a Bluewater Rally Convoy and left it to go hand out bibles.
