Wasn't there an old movie called "Soylent Green" that kinda predicted this day coming.

When you are on your boat sailing 1000 or 2000 miles from civilization, you'll likely realize just how meaningless everything outside of your control really is and you'll wish you hadn't wasted so many minutes and hours of your preciously short life in front of your computer asking questions of people who have likewise wasted hours of their lives typing answers they can't possibly know.

Actually this thread started out as a rather good one however when after well over 4000 posts the origional climate change thread got closed for rude behavion on the part of several posters. Who then moved over to this thread. Both of which were a welcome diversion during the northern winter. Most of the original posters check in every few days between sailing jaunts. Or as a diversion to refit work that has to be completed prior to sailing again.

Here is a link to the original should keep you entertained for a couple months.

2000 miles?

Another factoid (useful or not for sailors? ) : On this planet you can't go further away than 1670 miles from any land.

The "Pacific Pole of Inaccessibility" is the the point in the ocean farthest from any land is located at 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W. As far as I remember it's also called "Point Nemo".

I only know this because the area is also the "spacecraft graveyard". We try to drop our used spacecraft there when they reenter because it is the furthest point to any land or populated area.

First he said civilization not land but that's not the point I'm going to make it was meant as illustrative. (Dang physics majors don't get satire to well )

BTW back to work on your thesis stop procrastinating. LOL

Sail across the Indian Ocean and 2000 miles from civilization will feel like an understatement.

For me it's a distraction in between work. A few minutes here and a few minutes there. I don't party, go out drinking and pretty much spend my days working my but off between calls and working on my computer. Most of the people on this forum are great. I have come to even find great people in this thread. It's far less time consuming for me to spend a few minutes posting here than hours in argument at some watering hole.

A lot safer too. Given the emotion of some if the conversation was taking place in say a bar, I am sure I would have been assaulted more than once.

But you are of course correct in your main point. I remember camping out in the "dense bush wilderness" in Australia after hicking by map and compass from the ends of a forest fire trail for 10 miles. Pitching my hicking tent surrounded by ancient trees that looked like they came from the Jurassic age.

It was in such wilderness, completely detached from the rest of the world while gazing into the enormous star lit sky of immensely bright distant stars, that I realized how insignificant even my own existence was. Very humbling.

I have had the same spiritual experience out on the ocean. A bit more difficult though in a comfortable boat with all modern conveniences. I am sure if I were in a life raft in 1,000 miles off the coast I would have a similar experience as I first did as a child. Except in that case I would be praying very hard.

Yes we are insignificant in the scheme of things. Our back and forths are in so many ways just hot air. But on the other had the flap of a butterflies wings in Central America are also insignificant. But are they?

Sail safe and much happiness too you.

Peaceful yes, but you always know that if something happens, you're going to spend at least 3 days in a raft getting to know god. The Pacific Ocean felt like a gentle giant in comparison.

Actually when I was there if something were to have happened it would have likely been over in a matter of minutes . ( mid and late 80's to early 1990)

What? No Satphone, no GPS, how the helllll

Yep, soon there will be worldwide satellite 10G coverage, the only problem will be that sailing from one country to the next will become illegal or so expensive that cruising will end altogether unless you are rich. You can see it coming.

The middle of an ocean is a special place indeed

Though I find it difficult not to feel a little sad and thinking no way can this last seeing so much plastic even way out there.
Atlantic anyway.

Plus we're killing all the fish, changing the pH of the seas, changing the chemical composition of the atmosphere...,the list goes on.

Oh well, that's what animals do, bacteria to big brained monkeys. So it goes.
