It would seem that the answer to this is to boycott Fiji until this is corrected.

Not knowing the area, is that feasible?

I would probably still go there with Tongan papers, but leave if asked. At sea, the boats with the guns make the rules.

G'day, mates. I discussed this with a N.Z. warship 2 days ago. They advised that the Minervas are in Fiji's economic zone and Fiji has full authority to control the activity there. Cheers.

From today's 'Lectronic Latitude:

". . . this month, according to cruiser reports, Fiji is exercising its claim to the remote Minerva Reefs, which were annexed by Tonga in 1972."

As this NOAA satellite photo shows, there really isn't much to these tiny coral rings. So what's all the fuss?

G'Day all,

A disturbing event. If I had to guess the reason for Fiji's sudden interest, it just might revolve around them wanting to sell the fishing rights to that fertile area to some foreign group, as has happened in so many Pacific Island areas. Marine rape and pillage follows. Bummer...

Cheers (don't know if that is an appropriate closure here)

Jim
