Spent quite a bit of time between Panama and Colombia, and it is an area not to be missed. Probably the jewel of the Caribbean basin IMHO. However, I won't go into details, but that area attracts folks who are sketchy in terms of legality due to the near total absence of police in the San Blas. You are basically on your own in that area. As long as you operate with a bit of care you should able to avoid trouble, but you still have to stay on your toes. 99% of the cruisers are great and so are the Kuna, but there are these folks floating around that you should be wary of.

Its not just there.... Spain/Algarve has got its share... few years back an upturned tri was found.. when they righted it they found the skipper/owner chained to the mast... the young couple who'd joined as crew are now serving their time...

Another good reason for solo sairlors to be able to sail by themselves and not need crew.

I think there is a tendancy of people cruising to have more faith (or at least less distrust) of fellow cruisers, or expats than of the locals. While that may in some cases be justifiable......

Certainly this is not the first time that cruisers have been killed by fellow cruisers, or by crew or people they have invited aboard their boats. We would all like to think that we could identify a psychopath (and I can virtually guarantee that as a serial killer, this guy would score HUGE on a psychopathy checklist); the reality is that most are not only brighter than average, they are also often superficially charming. Put another way, they generally do not stand out like the Billy Zane charcter in the movie Dead Calm.

In any event, a very sad situation: two men cut down in their prime while pursuing a dream that we all share.

We knew Don North very well and are in shock about his murder. Rest in peace Don, I don't know what else to say...

Upon reading the article, this doesn't look like the usual randon violence. The accused looks just like a regular guy, but they were in a position as competiters that there could have been some friction between the two. Not really piracy, but it sounds more like a personal vendetta.
