Saltmonkey, my boat is fat with 13 feet of beam, and is too wide to fit in a container.

Re: Crew of SV 'Sanctuary' Abandon Ship
Leaking diesel fuel is a problem of itself. It is quite volatile, and the fumes will quickly nauseate anyone stuck in a closed space, making it impossible to stay in the cabin for any amount of time beyond a few minutes. Under these weather conditions, sleeping on the deck would not be an option. While the boat appeared to be viable, the bigger picture suggests this Captain made the right call. I'm not going to second guess his 44 years of experience. If his crew seemed happy and healthy when they arrived on the deck of the cruse ship, it is due to his care.

I've never been in conditions anywhere near that bad - so I am always trying to research tactics that could be used...just to prepare. It seems to me that a 45' breaking wave is going to do some serious damage to virtually any boat - but I'd like to know what you think.
Very glad you guys are safe. Sounds like you made a good call.

I never used a Jordan Series Drogue, so I can't comment on that.
However, I believe in speed and manoeuvrability during a storm. Speed gives you manoeuvrability to present quickly the stern of your vessel to the breaking wave. The down side of this is you are covering a lot of distance, not necessarily in the right direction...
The buffet and bar on the Gem were awesome! Their sense of hospitality is exceptional.

I think they got a lot for their money...
But, maybe only professional delivery Captains will understand that, in this type of business, you are dealing with boats that may not come as per your standards and specifications. You take them as they are and do the best you can with the equipment available. Also, the level of knowledge and experience of my paying guests had to do with my decisions. Their safety was my priority.
Captain Thierry Simon.

That also explains a lot. Were I a delivery skipper with paying crew, I would have a different set of priorities than if I was sailing alone with experienced crew, and I would have another set of priorities if I was on my own cruiser with my family, because I would have a very good idea of the soundness of the boat, our tolerance for misfortune and the odds of extricating ourselves out of a bad and even a critical situation.
But I'm not a delivery skipper, nor likely to be one. It's an entirely different job to just being a skipper of one's own cruiser, because you are likely a more broadly experienced skipper constantly sailing boats you may consider to be either inadequately equipped or not ideal for the proposed voyage.

I have used a drogue to good effect on one occasion, but I can see the logic in not running (all considerations of searoom aside). The problem with running is that it lengthens the time you are affected by the storm -- you're traveling with it instead of letting it pass.

I'm with you boaty 100%. SaltyMonkey would rather be in cabin watching cable TV in a storm. But thats assuming the boat is designed good enuf for heaven' or sea anchoring'. But these new fangled fin's don't seem to easily do either, and those spades seem to me a risk of a bending'. Hence my salty monkey preference for old slow wineglass designs. Gotta be proved wrong by my see in for myself.

CapPatAg,
She's sitting on her lines because the crew had been manually pumping out the incoming seawater. Check some of Captain Simon's earlier posts for the details.
