Crew of S/V 'Sanctuary' Abandon Ship

Here's the location of the boat reported by lenseman plotted on Google Earth, with an overlay of the Gulf Stream and other currents. It appears they had crossed the Stream and were in the vicinity of a fairly strong eddy current.

Sea-sickness on a small vessel can be contagious and devastating.
A dead engine and a bilge awash with seawater can be frightening.
But my guess is that the crew were suffering from cases of acute gambling withdrawl .....hence the proximity of the cruise ship and the smilly faces once they were onboard.

Hud, That is a most excellent screen shot. From the look of it, it appears they were running with the current, and the hanky furled jib seen in the Coast Guard video makes it appear they were reaching/close hauled. Wind against current, could make for rough sailing, don't you think?

A wind against the current made the roughest water I have ever sailed on, which coincidentally was a strong Northwesterner against the gulf stream. I was in the Bluewater sailing school, and the night before told the skipper that I would not ever go out in conditions like that. His reply " Well your not the skipper now are ya" We were in a 50 fter, and she got knocked around like a toy duck in a bathtub. Never forget it, but never repeat it either.

A few places around here that I wouldn't go in a Force 5 (20 knots) if the tide and wind weren't right......not to say always managed that

.......recently a fella (in a motorboat) had to sell from getting one of those decisions wrong (France to Jersey - only 15 mile) - wife lucky not to have divorced him (irony being it was her nagging to get home that overrode his common sense to wait another day ).....but a happy ending, he bought a small Sailing Boat - for him and kids

no,it is not true.if you have sick or injured person/ crew member on board you can call for help/ asistance. they will take sick person and you can continue your vojage. what if it is there calm sea, 0 wind. someone somehow fractured his/her leg,bone sticking out through the skin.all will hava to leave boat in perfect conditin and in perfect veder, because coast guard is not "ferry service".

IIRC, CG had this problem with skipper in "Perfect Storm" incident. Can't recall outcome.

Let's hope there is more to their story other than they decided this was not "fun" anymore or that sailing never looked like this on the Cruising World magazine cover.

Yes, good info, Hud! Looks like they were running to me in the video (with the current and winds). Definitely not close hauled. If nothing else watch the waves pass her stern to bow.

I read this whole thread (very fast) and still don't understand the conditions that required the abandoning of the boat.

Doesn't look like they were sinkng!

Is it just because they were sick of being tossed around?

Was it really worth the danger to themselves and the resue boat to take them off what looks to be a seaworthy boat?

I saw something about losing their life raft; who would ever consider getting off the sailboat and into a inner tube in the shown conditions.
