Crew Member Jumps Overboard

Crew member jumps overboard:

http://galvestondailynews.com/story/296026

We were coming into Galveston that evening direct from Falmouth - the seas were around 15' with a 'blue norther' blowing at F6-7. I wouldn't say that the vessel was struggling with the conditions, though some of the passengers may have been - nothing really out of the ordinary going on.

However, I'm still confused to why a crew member would apparently attempt suicide with a life-jacket and strobe attached - the article seems to infer that it was due to the conditions.. but as I mentioned, they were not bad at all - at least the Elvis impersonator didn't think so!

Anybody heard any more detail on this story?

Re: Crew member jumps overboard

The news reports have been very confusing. Everything I've heard insists he jumped, but like you asked, why jump with a life jacket and strobe?

All I can figure is that maybe he was required to wear the life jacket to get to the area where he could jump. Then after jumping and still being alive, he changed his mind about wanting to die.

Or maybe he just needed some attention.

Who knows?

One of the Eye witness accounts at the end of the following article indicates that the guy had a drunken fight with his girlfriend then hurled himself overboard - though how true this is, nobody knows!
