I work for a salvage company (not in Norfolk area)and not sure what kind of lift truck your husband mentioned...but it's usually not that easy....

Reading all this I feel both angry and sad. I feel sad that this family has just lost a huge investment and could be homeless for all we know. I fell VERY angry because someone aboard that boat either didn't have a clue or was so arrogant as to assume he could beat the odds. I am sure that lots of advice and warnings were offered at his marina if he made his plans known. After all, sailors on the whole are a helpful group and would be concerned for the family's safety. I'm just glad I don't have to face what he does. There is nothing like the sea for humbling a man.

Two observations from pictures. One, either the anchor and rode were impressively strong and set, or the bow could use some reinforcement.

Two, no surprise they had little power under engine. The prop looks like a barnacle farm, unfortunately.

I think the biggest lesson here is this: Anyone who is potentially in the path of a hurricane (that's everyone on the east coast, Caribbean, Gulf, etc...) needs to have a plan - a well-thought-out plan. Make it now. 1 day before the hurricane hits is not the time to start scrambling...

Somewhere upstream in this thread I thought I read that the couple were asked to leave the marina they were in because of some undefined incident.

If that was the case, would they have had legal grounds to refuse to leave given the imminent weather conditions? I recall reading or hearing once that a skipper could not be ordered to depart in clearly dangerous conditions.

Anyone know?

I am not going to be critical of them because I do not know enough to understand what was happening and why things were done. And because what I might think worth criticizing will have been already smashed home into their brains a thousand times more deeply that anything I could convey.

It would seem very surprising that a marina would kick them out on the eve of a hurricane, if that's what some think might have happened.

And, I hope that Meka the cat gets out of kitty jail!

I think it would be illegal to kick someone out of a marina when there is a hurricane warning? Surely this could in the event of death be seen as a form of man slaughter. At least it would be gross negligence. Maybe the more likely story would be that the fees asked for haul out were too much, or the only available berths were not suitable?
