Anyone wonder if the owner may have done this to try not to have to pay to move his boat?

The boat had been there far too long.

There were 5 boats on the rocks after the storm at my local marina. Everyone was removed within 2 days. Most the day after.

The city was trying to accommodate him by giving him extra time - because his story had become national news. Imagine that - out of the whole east coast he was the only one that made the news. Wonder why that was? Could he have been the only one that this happened to?

So now in the end the citizens of the town will end up paying to remove the burned out hull - with no possibility of any salvage value of any of the remains.

Re: Coast Guard Helping Sailboat In Distress at Ocean View In Norfolk, VA

we all run aground.
some do it more spectacularly than the rest of us.
just pray that there is no cause for loss of hope, as this person has found---loss of hope is devastating.
i am not defending his actions, nor am i defending him.
the name bella 420----i sit a42 ft boat?
still, no one shoulda burnt the boat=-- with a sound of an explosion, there was propane on board-- did the fire happen because of the system becoming opened by someone trying to steal from the boat, or was it aflame first...

Re: Coast Guard Helping Sailboat In Distress at Ocean View In Norfolk, VA

I think the C.G. stripped the boat of combustionables, and sewage. The man has been out of line with so many. It's possible someone wanted to get even with him. Not saying 2 wrongs make a right. Just a possibility is all. I am thinking one of the beach homes may have security cameras, and maybe that's why the authorities have suspects already?........i2f

I'd like to organize an effort to help Michael Calabrese - Page 14 - SailNet Community

I should've typed several leads, and not suspects. Post 137......i2f

Well...the saga ended this week with the crew coming in and hauling the burned out hull away after cutting off the keel. The photo below was in the paper and I went by the local marine consignment shop today to see if anything was in there from the boat. He noted that the person had been approached but didn't want to sell anything...go figure.

I don't think the saga is over for the owners. Their home is gone. Did they ever find out who set it ablaze?

I'm thinking it's possible that shorted wiring might have actually caused the blaze. I can't imagine a motive for someone to set it ablaze. On the other hand water and electric don't play together well.

the article said that accidental starting of fire was ruled out. so it wasnt faulty or old wiring. someone did that thing.

The coasties went down early last week and stripped the boat of all gas, oil, fuels, batteries, etc... As well as pumped out the sewage that was accumulating. They effectively made it 'safe'. So there's no way it would be found to be an accident at this point, even if it actually was... Otherwise the coastguard would have to take some of the blame, and that ain't gonna happen

Somebody will get burned for this, it's too high profile for it to be swept under the rug at this point. Let's just hope it's the right person...
