An earthquake of 8.0 magnitude has struck off Chile's coast near Iquique, triggering a tsunami warning for all of Latin America's Pacific coast, the US Geological Survey says.It said the quake was very shallow, only 10km below the seabed, which would have made it feel stronger.It was centred 86km (56 miles) north-west of the mining area of Iquique.The Chilean authorities have used TV to order the evacuation of coastal areas, urging citizens to escape speedily.A warning from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the coasts of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua were all at risk of a tsunami.It warned that waves of up to 1.92m (6.3ft) could have struck near the town of Pisagua, Chile, within 44 minutes of the quake.There have been no reports yet of damage.The USGS said a quake of this force had the power to generate a "destructive tsunami" for coastlines.Chilean authorities reportedly registered the quake as 7.9 magnitude.Chile is one of the most seismically active countries in the world.Central and southern areas of the country were hit by a powerful earthquake of 8.8 magnitude quake followed by a tsunami that devastated scores of towns in February 2010.

They are saying waves hitting Hawaii in predawn tomorrow morning. Polynesia before that. Hope they are safe.

It appears as of the latest no tsunami for Hawaii just larger then normal waves with hazard to boaters and swimmers

So with a event like this happening and lets say you are near South Africa coast or even in Hawaii at a marina. Would it be better to stay there or to go out for a sail and let the swells roll under you? If at dock stay tied up and add a couple off lines or go and anchor?

My thought go out for a sail let the force roll under you in the deep waters. 8.2 is kinda big for a quake.

It's best to be on the surface of deep water. Anything close to shore will have huge surges.

If you are on your boat when you feel a shake best to foxtrot oscar to sea asap.... ( thats based on my experience in Seno Aysen in April 2007.).... beats trying to run for it....
If you are in Hawaii and they say a big one is coming ditto... South Africa? I wouldn't worry too much...

An early memory is seeing on TV the 1960 tsunami - generated in southern Chile - coming ashore in Hawaii... one thing you don't do is go down to the seaside for a looksee...

They have canceled the alarm for Chile....

+1 on that. This is exactly the instruction that Ecuador's navy gave to the boats in the Galapagos harbor where we were anchored last night. We followed the instruction and by the time the wave reached us we were in 1500m of water and could not even tell there was a tsunami. All that was very easy because we had more than two hours' notice. I feel for the people in Iquique who did not have that luxury.

Thanks, for not being out there yet its nice to know what does work. I suppose in the wide open it could be just a swell if that. As the sea level decreases and you are closer to shore the force get closer to the surface and could be not so well.

Nice to know that is what you would want to do. I know I sure would not want to stick near to shore to see the pretty waves.
