EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

BULLETINS WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER IF CONDITIONS WARRANT.
THE TSUNAMI WARNING WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE PRODUCTS
FOR ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA...WASHINGTON...OREGON...CALIFORNIA.

Life on the rim of fire.
I am riding it out here in Iquique, northern Chile. I am anchored nose out and stern tied to a floating fingerdock. The surges started about 4 hours after the earthquake. I have one anchor out on chain and I have another rope tied to some underwater steel chunks. The boat is veering a bit but no damage so far.
The harbour, which is fairly protected, is filling and emptying every 5 minutes on a 15 minute cycle. Some fishing boats have broken loose and are causing some havok but not to me. Yet.

I was going to head out into the desert today but think I will stay close instead. We shall see what transpires.
Pete

Pete:
Please update your situation when things settle down, and for certain sometime today.
Good luck, to you, and ALL in harm's way!

***

Easter Island could be hit within the hour (by about 2:00 PM ZULU, 9:00 AM Eastern) by the tsunami generated by the earthquake that hit Chile around 1:30 am.

As tsunamis travel over open water they gain strength and then when they get to the shallow waters of outlying islands, they can become massive destructive forces.

This will give us our first look at what is in store for Hawaii, Australia, the Philippines and many other Pacific nations.

Exclamation

I have been posting on YBW/forums since 15 minites after the initial 8.8 earthquake at 0646Z today. Easter Island is currently being 'hurridly' evacuated. The islands of FP are at grave risk as is anyone at anchor in those locations:

If weather permits, would one be better off at sea in deep water rather than moored or anchored under such circumstances? (I don't intend to question anyones decissions for so many factors exhist. Just curious as to what 'conventional knowledge' is available, if any)

ALWAYS AT SEA! You need to read, note and inwardly digest the very, very sobering report of the Sptember 2009 Tsunami which hit Samoa, please read this right the way through to the end:

I did think about her but as she is in deep water she won't be affected. She probably won't even know it has happened unless she is told via SatPhone.
