Chicago Sailor Killed in Nassau

Kyle Bruner, Chicago sailor,34, was murdered in Nassau while attempting to save three women who were being mugged. The murder rate has risen by 35% from 2010 to 2011 and the U.S. State Department has listed the crime level in New Providence as "critical." Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Nassau and the rest of the Bahamas are two very different places when it comes to personal safety.

I've worked with the Bahamian Police on a task force in the Bahamas, and for a place that doesn't allow guns, the criminals sure have a lot of them.

Nassau has been the pits, once chased down a purse snatcher and retrieved the purse (not even a thank you from the victim or her husband) ,saw a 2nd attack an hour latter that was successful. The other islands are totally different and worthwhile.

We recently spent some time in Nassau and it's like any other large city. You need to be careful. It isn't one of our favorite places. The really scary part was watching the Miami news this evening. Chuck

Every decent sized city has places you just don't go at night. Nassau does, too. I used to see tourist walking toward places at night that I figured they would have had enough sense not to walk toward if they were in Miami.

Is that the same LIBERTY that winters in Key West (green hull)? Damn, a loss of a great guy.
But, Chicago is still probably worse than Key West which is getting as bad as Nassau. Any where there's cruise ships and tourist money for that matter.

It's a sad story but it could have just as easily have happened in Chicago.

It's just not reasonable to think that because exotic islands are beautiful, they're either more dangerous ... or more safe.

Godspeed Kyle. The type of person I would have enjoyed calling a friend but never had the opportunity.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Keyspc, I am greatly offended by your remarks about my hometown of Chicago. We only had 25 shootings, two dead, over the Easter Weekend and within the last few days 3 killed and 17 wounded. The City say the murder rate is down and that's what I call progress! Only 42 shootings in a couple of weeks! How could any reasonable person think that was "bad?" Kudos to the City of Chicago for their remarkable record. Breaking News and Opinion on The Huffington Post2013/.../chicago-shootings-3-kille_n_3191993...

Wow, I never thought the NRA would have members who were sailors. Or even power boaters for that matter.

Guns ane bullets they both should be outlawed

How in the name of posideon did the NRA or its members get pulled into this? Crime in a big city -- bummer. Go figure.

Camp David,
I think it would be a fair assumption to say you missed the ironic humor. I hope I didn't? Good luck and good sailing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony

Sorry, but that just isnt true. Violent crime rates vary widely across the world and I can think of many cities larger than Nassau which are very safe in comparison.

Sorry, I was talking about the US mainly. I've never been to Australia (most of what I know about Australia is from watching "Crocodile Dundee"), so I don't have a clue what it's like there.

But, I've sure found a few places in Europe and the middle east that it's not too good to get caught in at night.
