My understanding is that both Class A & B use VHF frequencies only. If you are getting their AIS data when offshore then its thru some other method.

...seems there are now satellites that can detect those VHF signals.

I was never so embarrassed as the time when, shortly after we arrived at Monterey after departing from Santa Barbara, the harbormaster came up on channel 16 and asked me to call my mother to tell her I was OK.

I love AIS, but receive only, and prefer to assign to myself all responsibility to avoid collision. All this technology raises too many expectations for loved ones.

That said, did the "missing" boat phone home shortly after arriving at destination, if that was expected?

I will not post to this thread again but this is just to say that I think cruisers forum is a great site. I also wish to express my thanks to all that read this post and especially to those that responded with messages negative or positive and generally good relevant advice or information. I have read it with interest and taken it all on board. I am just so thankful that his has come to a happy conclusion.
