catalina 34

We purchased a 1991 catalina 34 with a fin keel last yr. I know they make a good coastal cruiser but was wondering if this boat has the ability to sail blue water and if so what r some of the things it should be outfitted with.so far we have upgraded standing rigging and running rig. Have installed a B&g 4g radar and zuess chartplotters..3 bladed prop...just to list a few items any feedback would be appreciated thks Rob

Well... you will get lots of answers, some passionate. I would take it thru the Carribean Milk Run. I likely wouldnt take it across oceans. Not that it might be fine.... but like many I lean toward strong, overbuilt, protected rudder etc etc.
For crossing oceans you should know it from top to bottom, like;
How long since the keel was rebedded and rebolted?
Rudder condition from inside to shaft (remove to inspect)
Renew chainplates, workable storm sail plan you have rehearsed.
etc

I found this instructive.

Does the BOAT have the ability to sail bluewater? Of course!

The real question that you should be asking, though, is do YOU have the ability to sail bluewater in THIS PARTICULAR boat? That is a whole different matter, and something that only you can really answer.

+1

We owned a 1991 Catalina 34--we still miss that boat.. she was fast and comfortable. We would have cruised on it but it was just a little too small for 2 of us and a dog.

You might have issues with tankage on a longer passage. I would have considered sailing ours on the Transpac, but I wouldn't take one into the southern ocean!

Re: catalina 34

You may not be aware of our extensive C34 website.

Here are some observations from a coastal cruise from BC to MX:

1500 Mile Interim Refit Report & 3596 Update

We've owned ours for 17 years. I wouldn't. The fixed portlights aren't up to it. The opening ones aren't either. I've turned back from seven foot seas at seven seconds outside the Golden Gate, the pounding was not so nice. I've also sailed the boat in the ocean many, many other times, and all over the Bay & Delta.

It's a coastal cruiser.

Otherwise pretty stout boats.

Re: catalina 34

Take it out in the ocean and practice. Get a feel for how it does in bad weather. Learn to do what you can to reduce stresses on the rigging and rudder. Tankage is going to be an issue. Get a third reef for your main if you don't already have one. Watch your weather windows. Join the Catalina 34.org. Have fun.
