Re: Canadian Government Muzzles Fisheries Scientist

"Miller is not allowed to talk about the research." Once again, Big Brother is looming into the lives of everyday people. When you restrict a free flow of ideas and information and the government controls the dialogue, it is called Fascism by political scientists. We saw its deleterious effects in the "Iron Curtain" countries, in freedom of speech issues in present day Germany, Austria,Canada and the Scandinavian countries and its being thoroughly entrenched in the This is not about Big Business. This is government restricting Freedom of Speech. Thomas Jefferson once said "Without an intelligent electorate, Democracy is doomed to fail." As Civilization declines, Fascism rears its ugly head. Re: Canadian Government Muzzles Fisheries Scientist

I'm not so certain that politically motivated studies funded by Ottawa or secondarily by educational institutions financed by governments are all that factual.
I spent my formative years in the 50's and 60's commercial fishing for salmon up and down the BC coast and recall many of the old timers watching the runs of sockeye, coho and springs (kings) beginning to dwindle year after year.
It was a pretty simple explaination... the white fishermen were bound by law to stay outside the fishing boundaries across inlets where the salmon schooled up to spawn up the rivers. There was no such prohibition of native fishermen who routinely would set gill nets and seine nets across the inlets far up stream towards the mouth of the rivers. They would clean out up to 100% of the salmon runs and sell their catch to cash buyers. Four years later, the salmon run for that river disapeared.
Years later my son worked in both a Government Biological Station and on a commercial salmon farm in the Gulf Islands. He confirmed what I had known as the cause for the drastic reduction in salmon run quantity as well as the quality of wild salmon.
Political correctness apparently played a major role in the elimination of commercially caught salmon on the BC coast IMO. Capt Phil

Re: Canadian Government Muzzles Fisheries Scientist

Getting a clear picture of just what causes declines in fish populations is more art than science. Many studies from which data are derived are of questionable validity. In the Northeast here, species like the Striped Bass can come back from low populations with a vengeance. Species like Weakfish/Sea Trout can disappear for decades without explanation. Mother nature does what she wants and I believe man probably has less impact than he may imagine. Scientists often do not KNOW what causes declines, they speculate, hypothesize and like to blame commercial fishermen when catch/effort curves plummet. Folks seem to have forgotten the difference between hypothesis and theory. Not that fishing has no effect. Of course issues like hundreds of miles of Swordfish longlines on The George's Bank or gillnetting across an entire river! has to have an effect.

Regarding Salmon or Tilapia, etc. that are fed fish pellets...Someone else can eat them.
