Re: Bullying on the Waterway ( Sunset Lake, Miami )

I just sent off the following email to the Mayor and encourage others to do the same....

"Mayor Bower, Would you be so kind as to respond to the reports that a wealthy land owner and political contributor is using the Miami Beach Police Department for personal use to harass boaters that anchor near his home in Sunset Lake. This is a complete abuse of power, since the order either comes from the Chief of Police or his superior. And we all know who his superior is. With tight budget constraints in almost every city today, how do you justify the cost to the citizens of Miami Beach for the Officers time and use of a boat to coddle to this one individual and ask your police officer to harass innocent boaters in clear violation of Florida State law. It is the hopes of all of the boating public that an investigation by higher authorities will provide answers if you will not. But I did feel it necessary to voice my opinion in this matter and give you the chance to respond. I await your answers. Sincerely, "

Chuck, that's a fabulous letter, but I would expect no less coming from you. The Mayor will NOT be pleased having to answer that question...

Re: Bullying on the Waterway ( Sunset Lake, Miami )

Good one Chuck. Here is what I sent to the mayor this morning.

Quote:
As a long time boater who visits or transits Miami Beach every year, I am troubled by your city's use of Police Officers to ask boaters to move from an anchorage just because a home owner doesn't want to look at boats. I spend money in Miami as a tourist and transient boater, but this issue is yet another way to make me feel less than welcome in your city, hence less likely to spend money at the local marine establishments in your jurisdiction.

I hope that the City of Miami Beach explains to this home owner that he has no rights to prevent boaters from legally anchoring in Sunset Lake, and his tactics will not be tolerated by your office.
Everyone on the CF list should email the mayor. Mention that you spend $$ in the city, and would hate to see this one guy's actions have an adverse effect on local marine businesses.

Well done Canucksailor. From what I've read about this guy, this is way overdue. Try to get some good video and audio of his responses. He could be the next big thing on YouTube.

Wish we could participate.

Re: Bullying on the Waterway ( Sunset Lake, Miami )

Someone earlier wondered about Miami anchorages. imo, this is the best anchorage in the area in many ways. Only problem is, it's not easy to get ashore here, although there IS a street that ends at the water - but it's awkward getting out there. Still, if you have to take the pup ashore, or want to explore the area, it's a public space, not private. Dinghy security doesn't seem to be a big issue, although I certainly chain my dinghy when I'm there. It IS Miami, after all.

I remember writing a post in the original threat telling that the police in MB will do whatever to please the house owner due to his connections. I received some negative post due to my comments.. unfortunately I was right.

Wow, you would think that the owner could have paid the utility co to bury those cables.

Someone should play "Greatest Hits of the French Revolution" on their foredeck and see if Moneybags gets the suggestion.
