Re: Britain to Sort out Somalia in 2012!

The only vessels that were in evidence when I was there, were dug out canoes, the dhows that I saw came from other parts of the region and people aboard were not fisher folks. The one day that the US Navy allowed the locals to come out fishing in the 3 weeks, I was anchored offshore there, I only saw some really broken down canoes paddled by broken boards or what ever was at hand. Now in the intervening years since I was there, they may have built a viable fleet; if they did, how did they come by the money? As far as arms go, there is no shortage of AK - 47s anywhere. Some one had to have the money to bring them in. The things I saw, were the streets were ripped up to pull up the pipes and all the wiring had been salvaged to help pay for food, because they couldn't farm, if they did someone came by and shot them in the fields. The U.N. compound was the only building in Mogadishu that had power and that was because they brought in their own generators. The air port consisted of a runway and some sheet metal hanging in the trees to keep out the sun. There were some '50s vintage jets, but they were all piled up in a gully with any thing of value taken out of them.

Very clever, Boatman! Loki also happens to be the name of my inflatable. And, yes, I do know a joke lies therein . Capt. Rognvald, protector of the pantheon of Norse Mythology.

Hail, bro! Of course you are right. However, I have argued with the powers that be (and obviously to no avail) that Viking Danes (proto-norse) would have pronounced His name as Oden. May you have fair winds and following sea, Poul (Paul)

Good luck with that one ............but even if (yet another) failed war, might be a side benefit to folks wanting to pass through the area by boat more safely.

But my bet is all words and no action (and no money!) and simply part of his recent (Dog Whistle) announcement that all Muslims, Jews and non-beleivers are to be driven into the sea from whence they came......all in the name of cheeses (like in the good old days ).

Seems to not realise that only a minority of people in Britain are practising Christians and over half of the population sees itself as non-religious (as per the latest British Social Attitudes survey).....it's why we have stuff like electricity. and don't burn people on bonfires anymore.

Per this mornings Yahoo News story-2-2-2012 FYI
"
Britain appointed Thursday its first ambassador to war-torn Somalia for 21 years, Foreign Secretary William Hague said, as he made a landmark visit to the anarchic capital Mogadishu.
"I am delighted to have made the first visit to Mogadishu by a British Foreign Secretary for over 19 years. This is a sign of Britain's commitment to the people and country of Somalia," Hague said in a statement."

Good news. Is Hague staying in town so he can provide some support soon

Good Job Atoll,
that's one way to fix the problem but what took so long to come up with that idea?
