Beware Hyacinth

I have my boat moored in the Burnett River, on a fore and aft mooring, in the town reach of Bundaberg. Last friday around 3 pm a wall of hyacinth weed (around 5 feet high, if you can believe the eye witnesses) came hurtling down the river at about 6 knots. The Dam upstream had filled and "they" decided that they should release some water, and yes it had been raining here......for some time.

Mine was one of only 5, that stayed on their moorings, the others all ended up down stream in a god awfull tangle, and one gent got crushed between two boats for his trouble, his hip was broken, but it could have been much worse.

Over tea this arvo, in the cockpit, I and another owner, decided that despite the odd wall of hyacinthe it was still worth having a boat.

Audrey, I'd been told that they announce these 'releases' ahead of time; was that the case for you?

I ask because we're hoping to arrive in Bundy to clear in...and sure would hate to leave again, unplanned, in a gob of Hyacinth!

It was unplanned, and unhearalded. Also very unusual, I wouldn't worry about it happening again any time soon. It did cause some consternation though!
