Re: Bernard Stamm rescued

43 to 45 knots of wind, sailing down wind, should not be survival conditions for any 60 foot boat. 4 reefs in the main and storm foresails sounds like a well sailed boat. Why was a boat so flimsy that it literally broke in the middle from something that should be considered uncomfortable, but not unusual? Maybe a designer that cut corners to get fame for a fast boat, or maybe it was designed correctly and substandard work in the builders yard caused an unpredictable failure??? How many of our CF members would go to sea if they thought that their boat might break up in only 45 knots of wind??? I dont think the weak link was the crew. It was a faulty boat. Just my opinion._____Grant.

Re: Bernard Stamm rescued

Sounds like the frequency of waves may have been high and so they were steep.,maybe to much speed. Having done free falls off steep high frequency waves it's amazing our boats hold together. Wind is just one gauge. Water conditions won't necessarily correspond to wind strength.
Once sailed sustained 70 with gusts 85 knot. The wind was not the issue it was the friggin surf ride off the wave tops and the weird waves that came broad side and just smashed us. Down below you could feel the boat twist. If you ever fell off a wave and felt the impact you would wonder what holds these things together . A few hours of that and you can start to look for god.. Imagine that the coastal rescue crew could not pick them up. Those guys are nuts . So don't go by wind alone.

Good guess given that it broke in half.
Had it been strong enough it would not have done that . Thumb up smiley face moticon thing. Love this new format where I get to describe my sinister but loving intentions without the idiot real yellow circle smiley thing like other sites that have options to use real fake emotion things.

Re: Bernard Stamm rescued

The Rescue helicopter aborted its mission! Conditions must have been horrendous. Also he was sailing a 60ft boat with 1 crew member. The time of year and the area also must cast doubt on his decision to be where he was. He played russian roulette and lost his boat, thankfully no one died. Especially the people who put their lives at risk in the rescue.

The rescue chopper didn't abort, the men were unable to get to be lift to be picked up and hence the chopper couldn't lift.

Re: Bernard Stamm rescued

The boat that was designed for Offshore racing should be perfectly OK in this kind of weather , particularly under the command of a competent crew.
The boat is probably pushed a bit too much towards the performance overlooking the structural strength, hence, the safety..
In my view, this is the boat that didn't hold, not the skipper..

Re: Bernard Stamm rescued

As to Helicopter goboatingnow. Abort means to stop what you have already started. The skipper of the Titanic was a competent and very experienced captain. He also made decisions that had his unsinkable ship sink.

As to the sea worthiness of these race rockets, have you forgotten the number of breakdowns these boats suffer. Most are constructed with the emphasis on short term speed rather than longevity. Obviously Sea state must have been extreme after the series of 100mph winds that passed over that part of the North Atlantic which rolled through in the last 10 days. If you or I had suffered the same fate I am not sure if our decision to be in that area at this time of the year would have resulted in such kind praise.

Most race boats of all types are always built to the edge and it is not uncommon for them to tip over that edge. Even with the most competent crew.
