From my Armchair I read about the first (British) Afghan War. Out of a force of 12,000 only 1 made it back.

But maybe it will be different this time........

Sounds like someone is afraid to pull the trigger. You got battleships, aircraft carriers, and god knows what else and you cannot get 5 guys in a row boat chasing a sailboat going an average of 5 knots an hour?
Really that shows a complete lack of understanding of the issues and problems there. Military force solves nothing ( see Vietnam, korea, chad,Egypt , Congo,Afghanistan,Iraq, northern ireland,Lebanon,Bosnia, etc etc ad nauseum

military force by itself would solve nothing. but blanced military/police/navy force along with education, information, and communication will be better then what it is...

Gota say, if I ever get myself into some similar situation....... I hope the Military force is somewhere close by so they're in a position to NOT solve my problem!!

Just sayin (but I mean it).

OTOH, consider Carthage, Nazi Germany, Saxon England, Napoleonic France, and the Confederate States of America. Military force took them all out.

A more exact statement might be something along the lines of "military force can solve some problems but not others -- and almost never from the point of view of the losers."

Not that I'm suggesting anything about how to handle the piracy issue. I just hate blanket statements like the one quoted.

I would disagree that Military force solves nothing - what solves nothing is the limited use that "we" put our military to. Kinda like poking a hornets nest with a stick and then wondering why yer get stung on the bum a lot The answer is not to poke harder..........

My solutions to the places mentioned above would work, and be pretty final But nowadays 50% of them are called war crimes. and the other half are termed crimes against humanity.

That's why the West keeps losing conflicts (even if we declare Victory! to our own populations - the other side knows better).

The time for tolerance with these thugs is long gone, they only understand one message? Once a few more are blasted out of the water they may get the picture! Pussy footing around has done nothing! The Koreans had the right idea the other week, zero tolerance, end of story!

The Royal Navy has turned down a request by a Dutch couple who asked for a warship escort for a yacht flotilla across pirate zones of the Indian Ocean.

Rene and Edith Tiemessen told the Daily Express they have the right to protection as they make their way home from Thailand in their 60ft yacht, "Alondra" ...

... The Tiemessens said that they have organised a convoy of about 30 yachts from Thailand to Turkey, and asked the Royal Navy for protection for about a four-day stretch of that journey. Rene Tiemessen told Sail World that there are at least 200 to 250 other cruising sailors on 100 yachts that are seeking the same sort of protection given to commercial vessels ...

Gordmay, so glad you posted this, full marks to the Dutch couple and shame on the Navy for not looking into this in a bit more detail! Surely this is a good idea, where all nations who have milatary vessels in the area agreed to provide security on a certain date of the year, protection for groups of boats who want to do the crossing together! I am sure if there were 6 dates per year available it would help thousands of sailors! What is wrong with the Navy doing this once a year? it could be seen as some sort of a milatary exercise and would be good training for the men on board! These scumbag pirates make my blood boil!!

Sorry guys.... afraid I disagree with the above.. if the Dutch couple want protection from pirates they should approach the right people... the Yemeni authorities whose waters they'll be transiting...
I'm sure they could provide a Gunboat to serve as the 'Sheepdog' for the few days required... or...
They in turn could petition friendly forces in the area to supply a vessel if they could not meet the request.
A Warship operating and opening fire in another countries waters can open a real can of worms... especially in that part of the world... its not the Captains call...
He and the Navy do their Political masters bidding... and with the current situation in Egypt, Yemen, Algeria etc you can imagine the harvest reaped by extremists if the 'Unbelievers' opened fire and 'Massacred Innocent Unarmed Fishermen' trying to make a living....
Yachties need to learn to knock on the right doors...
