Another Sailboat loss

Seems like folks keep trying to drive their sailboats right through the Charleston jetty, like the infamous Morning Dew.

This one was a 63' Cheoy Lee sailboat. Luckily, no one was injured.

I can imagine the heartache loosing your pride and joy at your own hand...I hope I never find out like that.

We were leaving a very small marina in BC one afternoon and in aw of the sounding beauty and distracted by it all I heard a yell from the dock "Dont go that way" I spun the wheel and glanced over the side to see a reef not but several inches below our spinning props..it was only marked with one white buoy much like a mooring ball..

Had that been our now deeper draft sail boat I as well might have sunk us right there and then...

One hand for the boat one for yourself...one eye for the horision one for the chart.

We were transiting Charleston Harbor at the time and listened to this transpire over the VHF.

Vessel reported it was outside the harbor near the channel. Reported hitting a submerged piling. Never called MAYDAY, merely reported they were taking on water.

The power vessel Pay Dirt was within site and reacted quickly to help. On radio they told Ryota that if they didn't change course they would hit the sea wall. Ryota responded they had no power. Pay Dirt transferred occupants and took line to tow the boat. They had to cut it free shortly before she sank. They reported seeing her go down by the stern.

USCG was in frequent contact but it was after vessel went down that we saw a Coastie but speeding in that direction.

The hole must have been major because it went so fast.
