Anchoring Laws Being Written in FL Keys

the monroe county is writing laws now that concern anchoring and mooring in the florida keys. the public meetings had a few people show up mostly cruisers and voice their concerns but the county commision and other government officials will be writing the laws. funny when they schedule these meetings in june when most of the cruisers are gone. here is an idea, go to their website monroecounty-fl.gov/ and click on contact us or complaints and be heard. just because you are not here now does not mean you cant help. please pass this info on and help in the fight. me and a few other cruisers noticed the info they gave at the meetings was inaccurate. they say the mooring fields have enough capacity for everyone but this is not true in the winter and anchoring and time limits should not be restricted. it costs you nothing to email them. please help

Re: anchoring laws being written in fl keys

Well, this is just not correct that Monroe County is writing anchoring laws. The FWC is giving 5 areas the chance to waive the current Florida anchoring regulations where there is a current mooring field. Boot Key Harbor, Sarasota, St. Augustine and a few others are applying for this test pilot program. It is of limited duration and then the FWC will make its recommendations. There are public hearings on this issue in the area affected. Details are available here, http://www.boatus.com/gov/pdf/GA005F...gPaper2011.pdf and additional info here, http://myfwc.com/boating/anchoring-mooring/ .Chuck

Re: anchoring laws being written in fl keys

while it is true the fwc will have the final say on the ordinances drafted, I REPEAT it is the monroe county government that is now drafting the local ordinance to send to the fwc. i was at the meeting on wednesday and was told this by fwc officials and monroe county comission. about 30 other cruisers were there and were not happy about these ordinances being drawn up by local gov. there were also meetings in st augustine, key west, and upper keys

Dave, that is the process that is in place - the locals propose regulations, invite input from the public, the FWC then rules on it. Waterway Guy (Chuck) is well up on these issues, he works in marine media as I do and this is part of his beat.
In St. Augustine, the outcome seems to be that anchoring will be restricted to within 50 feet of the mooring fields. That's not unreasonable. There was also some discussion of a time limit, and St. A is appearing to be reasonable on these issues.
There's additional coverage at Claiborne Young's site on this, you might want to check it out.
That being said, cruisers should be making their thoughts known via email about these issues. We're the ones who are affected by them.

Re: anchoring laws being written in fl keys

Having spent a good year or so cruising in Florida, registering my boat and two dinghys in Florida and being endlessly harassed by Florida's water police, let me tell you that Florida is a dump.
Come on down to Honduras where you can actually see the bottom, look at lovely coral, and go as you please. Sure, there are officials with their hand out, but they have the decency to be embarrassed about it. And the food is great.
