Ha! No, those are railroad timbers. But, you can see undersized rudder stock is a concern for other boats as well.

Looks so nearly identical I wonder if both rudders were built by Foss. Plug and play rudder is possible on a design like this, sure would be faster and easier than designing and building your own. Just call Foss and tell them to build you some rudders just like the other cat builders use. I wonder..

For you leaners out there.

Cat rudders are just a few inches shorter than the keels. The rudder shafts can be smaller than a mono hull because of less area and forces.

Mono rudders are just a few inches shorter than the keel. The rudder shaft has to be much larger and thicker to support the large area and high loads

The thinking here, is that if you run aground the solid Keel should always hit before a movable and weaker rudder

What's a good blade approximation for a 45' cat? 2' x 4'?

A 40yr old Catalac's steering system is better than this..

Now that the entire crew is safe: For the sake of Gregor Tarjans Alpha project I think it is imperative that the boat is salvaged. Otherwise there will be too much speculation which is not good for marketing. It was written somewhere on the net that no other mono- or multihull would come out of this situation without damaged rudders.
This can not be concluded before the boat is thorougly inspected.
I've been following the birth of the Alpha 42 from a distance, and communicated with Gregor for a possible purchase of No. 1.
I hope he finds out whether there is a design/ construction issue or not, so he can continue and be successful.
It puzzles me too that the damaged rudders could not be disengaged and either;
-One emergency tiller / rudder used or
-Both rudders being neutralized and steering done with one or two engines.

I am thinking of what I would do if my crew is not in imminent danger and my cat is just disabled but not taking in much water. Will I then be fined for the rescue operation? It must cost more than the boat!

those of you comparing leaner rudders to cat rudders need to keep in mind that there are two rudders on a catamaran….

On the plus side however... one could unpin them, shove the stock through to dispose of them, plug the holes and proceed under engine.. if both engines are working..

So given the latest writeup, does anyone have any additional thoughts on the boat?

I can understand the rudder failure, but the engine issues, leaky windows, charging issues... seems like a LOT of problems. Would certainly make me think twice if I had one on order.
