I wonder if Gregor Tarjan was on the boat too? For it's first big offshore trip, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm glad they are all okay. Must have been a bummer of a last few days for them all. I'm sure a bunch of rampant speculation will fill these pages, but I'm looking forward to hearing the real story.

Mods, I really think this entire deal should be moved to the multi forum and possibly be retitled to include Alpha 42. Nobody knows the name of the boat but most here have heard of the A42.

This is a new $400,000 cat. I think I should hire a private ship and run down there for a salvage operation.

I know nothing of cats but if the loss of both rudders is correct and there was no collision can a cat person explain?

From the one article, it sounds like it was caught by some kind of wave that drove the boat backwards fast enough to rip off both rudders, causing flooding and failure of the engines. They had to manually pump out the boat for 50 hours until the Coast Guard could get there.

Not a cat specific problem. Friends of mine on a Niagara 35 had a steering failure when they were trying to fore-reach in a gale offshore and ended up surfing backwards down a wave.
Not sure how these guys ended up going backwards down a wave, but that tends to be very bad for the steering gear if you get going fast enough.
