Thanks Nick Sounds like a good guy to know.

I have a friend down there in similar line. I hope he is OK and is lucky with the right backpackers.

Javier Martin seems like a real piece of work. While he is being tried in print, the evidence against him is overwhelming.

He worked for the Frenchman, then moved that Catamaran to another port and presented paperwork showing he had bought it. Was changing the name and appearance of the boat when the Frenchman's body was discovered.

He was known to have left with Don North on his boat, which turned up later with another name on it.

He was in possession of Don North's credit card when apprehended, as well as a pistol which is likely the weapon used to murder the Frenchman.

He left lots of stuff of Don's boat stashed in a tent, including Don's gun.

He made a number of threats along the lines of 'I'll kill you if you go to the police, and I've killed before'.

The latest is that the paperwork for the boat he came on and wrecked on a reef (left port in a bad storm) looks like a forgery, and now they are chasing its history to see if there was yet another cruiser that disappeared.

We always found it interesting, while we lived aboard for ten years, how seemingly intelligent people abandoned all caution and trusted complete strangers they met while cruising. There is an implicit assumption that if you sail aboard a boat that you share all the feelings, sentiments and ethics of the sailing community. How few cruisers truly research potential crew and mates before they undertake serious offshore adventures for days, weeks, even months away from land? We should use caution and all available means when encountering and dealing with strangers at sea while keeping an open mind about all those we meet. This is a very sad example of good faith and goodwill that became a tragedy. My condolences to their families and those who knew them in the sailing community. Ron

Wow, this story is reading like a good murder mystery novel. Except you just can't make some of this stuff up. So sorry for the victims, and it seems like there may be more than just the two when this is all over. If it is ever all over.

+1 . . . Sincere "Thanks!" for the links to Don Winner's very detailed reports, teneicm. I hope they're able to establish the true owner of the "Twyla" and find out how Javier Martin came into her possession in 1997 in the BVI. More than likely, her previous owner will not be found alive.
